Lights suddenly went out in the Penn Mutual building yesterday around 5 PM plunging hundreds of tenants into darkness. Workers were finishing daily tasks including balancing books dictation and discussions when the outage struck without warning.
Crowded passenger elevators stalled between floors and a broken piston rod in the dynamo engine caused a blast of steam. The engine room filled with vapor, forcing tenants to flee, while a janitor lit a lantern and investigated the cause with the engineer unable to cut the flow.
A Turin despatch says the Duke of the Abruzzi plans to renounce all rank to marry Miss Catherine Elkins, but the King reportedly refuses to accept the resignation. Admirals and officers urged royal approval and were detained, with many senior officers signaling resignation in sympathy.
An early morning quake centered near Phocaea, 24 miles from Smyrna, left eight dead and damaged buildings in Phocaea. Chili felt strong shocks causing panic though no major damage or casualties were reported there. Smyrna itself reported no loss of life.

Jan 19 North Chelmsford report of Brookside Worsted Mill blaze where 80 women and several men racing down a steep stairway escaped a raging fire. Flames closed behind them yet there was no panic as they reached safety, watching the fire consume the upper room.
A devastating blaze tore through Brookside worsted mill No. 2 and George Moore wool scouring mill in Lowell, trapping about 200 operatives, mostly women. Overseer Samuel Ogley ordered quick exits while firemen fought flames and a brick wall held the blaze briefly before collapse. About 600000 to 700000 dollars in losses reported. no serious injuries.
President-elect Taft spoke at Tubman High School for Girls in Augusta Georgia on beauty and love and the issue of unmarried women. He cited Massachusetts as facing a serious problem over what to do with single women and urged empowerment through suffrage and education.

Total Rockefeller gifts to the university reach 21.8 million for endowment and other purposes.
