Biddeford Maine workers, including Dr R N Randall and young nurses, carried patients a quarter mile to safety as the $35 000 Trust Hospital burned. Randall repeatedly entered the flames to save patients despite orders to stay out.
In a January snowstorm off Long Island, the schooner Swallow of St. John’s Newfoundland and its 12 crew members were lost. Wreckage spread along Fire Island beaches as authorities piece together the tale of the ship’s demise.

A blast wrecked the front of the Brockton born Thayer home in Onset, shattering windows and starting a fire. Mr Thayer, about 65, died in the underground cellar after recharging a gas plant and lantern incident, while Mrs Thayer, bedridden and weak, is now seriously ill from the shock.
Seattle police theorize attorney and former bank examiner Seeley murdered his wife Kate and daughter Rene in their Capital Hill home over financial worries then died by suicide. Wael Seeley, an attorney, was found dead with no outward injuries, while the two women were in nightclothes and showed hammer marks. The victims had been dead since last Thursday.
Fire at Park Square caused by overheated stove in a garage destroyed over 400 automobiles and the Park Square station train shed and bicycle track. Building used for automobile trade burned. In under an hour a blaze swept Park Square destroying over a million dollars in property. The Park Square station train shed housing 400 cars burned, the Mathew Coal barn on 45 Columbus avenue perished as six horses died. Gasoline explosions towered over nearby structures as the roof collapsed and flames engulfed the garage area.
Never before in this city has there been such destruction of property by fire and so many autos ruined. Prominent Bostonians lost their vehicles and sight seeing wagons used in the summer were burned, along with hundreds of demonstration cars reduced to scrap iron. Continued on Page 2-First Column.

At a Lenox hotel a 2 am fire left Mr. Weld unconscious in a corridor. Fire brigade suppressed flames before Engine 33 and ladder 15 arrived. Doctors cited syncope as death cause, worsened by fire excitement. Weld, diabetes sufferer, lived at Lenox, unmarried with a sister in Bay State road and offices at 18 Tremont street, formerly tied to a Savannah fertilizer firm.
A Commerce and Labor Department report shows Boston imports dropped from 116 million to 81 million and exports from 95 million to 76 million in the 1908 period. New York imports fell from 777 million to 682 million and exports from 617 million to 578 million, with about 400 million of the 5 million national foreign trade reduction passing through Atlantic ports.
Henry P Booth a renowned figure in global shipping died at his New York residence after a long career. He co founded James E Ward & Co initiating the first regular New York to Havana steamship line.
