The House rules committee moves to broaden investigations into the presidents peace note. It adopts a 30 day extension with authority to sit in Washington or elsewhere and to hire counsel and expert accountants. A session is not planned for tomorrow.
The committee debated hiring counsel to cross examine witnesses and to pursue rumors underpinning the investigation, a move that temporarily shaded the session’s main goal.
In Brockton on January 17 1926 police found 6 year old Eldon and his 6 month old sister Ruth dead in a gas filled bedroom after their mother Annette Miller age unknown attempted suicide using gas. The home was locked and the 8 year old John Miller reported entering from school.
At Wellesley College Gabby the spaniel belonging to Professor Eleanor Gamble of the psychology department attacked and shredded a suffrage banner found by Billings Hall students. The scene ended with cheers for Gabby as the banner was destroyed.
London January 17 Pope Benedict has asked the German empire to halt Belgian deportations and to repatriate Belgians sent to Germany. Cardinal Gasparri's letter to Cardinal Mercier, Belgiums primate, outlines the papal appeal and was released here.
Cardinal Mercier ordered priests to aid civilians and comfort families of deported Belgians. Cardinal Gasparri relays the pope's concern, says he has urged the German government to end deportations and bring victims back to mourn with their kin. The pope also sends a special benediction to the Malines diocese.
Adjutant General Pearson urged military training for boys from age eight during the 26th annual Sons of the American Revolution dinner at Copley Plaza representing Governor McCall. Dr. Hugh Gordon Miller of New York also spoke at the event.
Cardinal O Connell harshly attacked educators in American schools and colleges at the Holy Cross Club dinner in the Lenox Hotel. He claimed fewer than half of educators believe in God and only 35 percent accept immortality, while commenting on Europe’s war and current global confusion. He questioned ministers who opposed peace and warned about war justifications.
Charles P. Searle senior member of Searle & Waterhouse died at his home 280 Commonwealth Avenue. He was 62, a Massachusetts bar figure and customs law expert born in New Marlboro. He graduated from Amherst in 1876 and attended National Law School before being admitted to the bar in 1884.
The State High Cost of Living Commission urged a law requiring every loaf sold carry a weight label and set a new loaf standard. It critiqued the weight commissioner for lax enforcement and called for no underweight bread, with a plan to adjust loaf size to flour price while preserving purchaser protection via weight labels.
New York reports the German raider has terrorized allied shipping in the south Atlantic. The Japanese steamship Hudson Maru docked at Pernambuco with a prize crew and 237 sailors from crews of over a dozen ships sunk or captured by the Teutonic. Approximately 450 others remain unaccounted for.
Reports conflict over how many ships were sunk, with unclear lives lost and extent of damage. The confusion prevents a firm tally as authorities assess the naval action and its aftermath.
Miss Mabel Delorey walking home from a movie with escort was attacked by a holdup man who choked her with a muffler. Night watchman William Hemingway intervened and subdued the suspect as Michael Dwyer joined with Miss Delorey to seek help from the Fort Point Hotel.
David Hughes of South Boston aged 76 and Civil War frigate commander died of heart failure at Dooley's Hotel in Portland Street. He had registered to catch an early train to New York for a comrades reunion, after donning a new Grand Army uniform yesterday.

A Dorchester house at 27 LeRoy Street housed the Levenbaum family and others. Fifteen year old Samuel Levenbaum discovered the blaze and braved flames to rescue Mr. and Mrs. Kaplan’s two children, bringing them to safety on the street.
Annie Hayes known as Annie Gallagher, famed artists model depicted in A Tenement Mother, was arrested after a long chase through the South End streets. She faces charges of holding up and robbing a man in the doorway of her home at 9 Ohio Street.
Jeremiah Hayes allegedly aided the robbery and was found hiding in a closet on the fourth floor of an Ohio street house. Four hours of searching followed before officers captured him with cartridges and a revolver found in his possession. John J. Kelleher reported being grabbed, restrained, and relieved of a watch and cash before the female suspect fled. A chase along Wheeler street into Shawmut avenue ended with Reserve Officer Michael Cushing catching up.
Alfred B. Kenrick, 66, of 71 Gorman Avenue Brookline, a leading local plumber and director of Brookline Savings Bank, died after a long illness. Born February 15, 1851, he served as past president of the National Association Master Steam and Hot Water Fitters, a longtime member of the Master Plumbers' Association, and formerly engineered the Brookline fire department. He belonged to Beth-Horn Lodge A F and A M St Paul Arch Chapter De Molay Knights Templar and the Beacon Universalist Church.
