Admiral Dewey, the United States naval hero and ranking officer of the world, dies at his home in Washington in his 80th year. The White House issued a statement praising his faithful service in peace and war. The country mourns as Dewey is laid to rest.
The House rules committee widens its note leak inquiry to finance figures and a two day hunt for Ruth Thomason Visconti, a private detective linked to scandals. J. P. Morgan and other financiers are subpoenaed while Visconti is sought. she is to appear tomorrow as investigators press the case.
Aged admiral dies after a year and a half of arteriosclerosis. Despite preserving vigor, he collapsed at home after a day at his office. Mrs. Dewey and his son George were by his side as President Wilson and Secretary Daniels were informed.
John J Havlin a famed sporting figure of a prior era died in the Haymarket Square Relief Station after five days of pneumonia at age 65. Known as Dearo he lived in Roxbury and the North or West End, recently at 15A Chambers street. He backed John J Sullivan early in his career and served 21 years as head clerk at the Hampton House a lifelong Boston Nationals fan. He is survived by one son.

In Boston the evangelist Billy Sunday began the last lap of a 10 week revival. 17000 filled the Tabernacle with 10000 more turned away as he railed against Unitarianism Universalism Christian Science Theosophy and Ethical Culture. Crowds surged and the Huntington avenue grounds overflowed as ushers closed doors early.
A 500 strong Haverhill delegation travels with valid tickets for the event, signaling organized attendance and expected turnout.

The Deutsche Verein moved Mrs Skeffington’s talk from Emerson Hall to the Harvard Union after college authorities blocked the meeting. The crowd filled the Union as she spoke on British policy and answered questions for over an hour.
The Rev. William Sullivan departed after Tuesday noon services at King's Chapel to attend a parishioner's funeral in New York. He will not speak at Wednesday's service but will return to deliver the Thursday noon sermon.
A three story six apartment building named The Maples at 65 Westminster Ave was destroyed by fire, with six families left homeless and $10,000 in damage. Firemen and police suspect arson, and a nursemaid carried a 10 month old baby from the crib through smoke down two flights of stairs. An adjoining building suffered smoke and water damage before the blaze was put out after three alarms.
Nine year old Dustin Custin stepson of I H Bernstein in The Maples apartment building led a Scout group through blazing hallways at the start of a fire to save a portrait of his deceased father. A playmate pulled him to safety in the street.
Bremen dispatch reports preparations completed for the merchant submarine Deutschland to sail for an American port. The notice, transmitted via Berlin to London, places the event on January 16 and early January 17 time.
District Attorney Joseph C. Pelletier urged modifying Jesse Pomeroy’s solitary life term toward a commuted sentence like other lifers in Charlestown State Prison. New York January 16 The Republican national committee peace offer was rejected by the Bull Moosers led by George W Perkins The group called the invitation meaningless and demanded an immediate meeting of the full Republican national committee to iron things out.
Chairman Willcox plans to persuade Perkins and allies to drop protests against John T. Adams as national vice chair. Perkins faces Old Guard accusations of sparking the dispute to back Theodore Roosevelt’s 1920 presidential bid, seeking cooperation or amalgamation with Progressives in each state.
Cornelius H. Lynes aged 16 of Milton was killed instantly on his first day at work after stepping onto tracks at Hyde Park station. He opened a gate instead of using the foot bridge and was struck by an inbound express train, dying of a fractured skull. His body was taken to City Hospital Morgue. He told his mother earlier he felt like a regular man.
