John Wanamaker, trustee of the United Society of Christian Endeavor, is invited to speak at the Christian Endeavor Day celebration for eastern Massachusetts societies to be held at Mechanics Hall. Fellow trustee Rev Wayland Hoyt of Philadelphia will join him, with President Francis E. Clark presiding and opening the meeting.
Berlin January 14 The North German Gazette carries an official denial of press claims that Germany offered excuses for its Transvaal action. The Emperor met today with the son of Baron Von Schuckmann, the new German consul at Cape Town.
Martin Brimmer former Harvard overseer and Boston civic leader died at 11:35 last night at 17 Beacon Street from injuries suffered three weeks earlier. Born 1820 in Boston he served in the Massachusetts legislature and as a presidential elector in 1876. He was a patron of arts and letters and led the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
London Jan 14 Sir Hercules Robinson Governor of Cape Colony telegraphs that he has completed arrangements to receive from the Transvaal officials Dr Jameson and the members of his party who were captured by the Boers Nine prisoners will be received at the Natal border.
The first class battleship Revenge flagship of the flying squadron, with Rear Admiral Alfred I. Dale in command, and the battleship Ruyavas along with two other ships and fifty-man crews, were commissioned at O cidra this morning. A parade and massed bands marked the ceremony as officers boarded. Admiral Dale is ordered to take the squadron to Persnaven on Saturday. The cruiser Hermione and six torpedo destroyers were also commissioned and will join at Portland. VALESTA Malta reports the arrival of a large British Mediterranean squadron from Salonica Bay including Ramillies Hood Anson Howe Barfleur and several cruisers and torpedo ships.

Mr Chamberlain wired the Cape Governor about arrests in Johannesburg of Reform Union members raising fears these arrests could disrupt Rand industries. He asked for details on charges trials bail and penalties.
Joseph Wells a 30 year old Boston casket salesman died at Rhode Island Hospital from injuries after leaping from a moving Shore Line express at Webster Street crossing last night. He had been drinking and was en route from Providence to Boston when the accident occurred.

At East Boston Morrison's coal wharf the old towboat Thurlow Weed owned by Gilbert Smail and others was badly gutted by fire. Sylvia Valentine, a 75 year old woman from Everett, faced District Court in Malden for alleged arson at an Everett house on Oct. 27. Deputy Fire Marshal Shaw led the prosecution. she was found probably guilty and bound over to the grand jury.
A well known Malden society woman threatened legal action against an Everett pharmacist after he kissed her twice on the mouth in his shop. The case was placed in the hands of her counsel with demand for settlement and apology by next Monday. If unresolved a $1500 suit will be filed.
A Post reporter traces an incendiary lead after a boy named James Smith places a man in a light overcoat and brown hat near the vestry door moments before the Wood Memorial Church fire. Several skaters recall a red glow and a hurried exit, with police lacking a solid clue as investigators seek the culprit amid parishioner suspicions.
In London a meeting of the International Arbitration League urged arbitration of future U S U K disputes and cooperation to promote friendship. A committee including religious and civic figures was named. The Daily News predicted the gathering could mark a historic push toward universal arbitration.
A Boston Harbor disaster left nine dead when the steamer Barnstable collided with the Fortuna off Highland Light at 7 30 PM. Captain John W Greenlaw led the Fortuna with 27 aboard. 17 survivors remain. The night was calm and moonlit as crews endured loss and desolation.

At 3 Hope place West End officers found policy slips tickets and arrested Charles Parker and Ellen Rich while others were taken into custody for being present where gaming implements were found.
In Marysville Kansas on January 14, Mrs Joseph Hid dabram killed seven of her eight children with poison and hanged herself. The surviving child is not expected to recover.
In Nantucket on January 14 the young ladies hosted a leap year ball at the Atheneum. The ladies escorted the gentlemen to the ballroom, marking the first use of leap year privileges in town.
