Pinchot Warns on Conservation vs Special Interests

Former forest service chief Gifford Pinchot, ousted, declares the nation faces a moral choice between conserving natural resources and preserving popular government. He warns Congress must act to thwart special interests that would control water powers, phosphate deposits, and Alaska coal lands, arguing the people’s home and welfare depend on public lands remaining public. The Mississippi valley must keep waterways as a commercial asset and prevent monopolies in transport. Pinchot urges citizens to hold their representatives accountable to protect public rights.
