Speaker Cannon pledged a square deal for insurgents entering the Republican caucus. He warned no one would face a trap and no definite assurances could be given on caucus outcomes. He said all 200 plus Republicans should attend.
Insurgent and regular Republicans maneuver toward a caucus early next week to name a committee to investigate the Ballinger-Pinchot affair. Speaker Cannon says past misdeeds won’t be punished and all Republicans should participate. President Taft and Rep Hayes discuss the insurgent stance and aim for a fair inquiry leading to a united verdict.

In Philadelphia a 16-year-old Roberta De Janon and Frederick Cohen return with their gray fox terrier Tootsie after being captured in Chicago. The pair eloped from the Bellevue Stratford on December 29 with Robert Buist’s granddaughter and the wife’s family involvement sparked police bustle and official hubbub.
Miss Delanon and Cohen arrive in Philadelphia under detective escort after a 26 hour pursuit. Cohen shows calm in custody as Delanon clings to her claim he harmed her not. Mrs Cohen pleads with police, while officials seek charges for the waiter amid a tense scene at City Hall.
The Humane Society considers awarding gold medals to Harvard students John E. Nightingale and Kenneth L. Lindsey for rescuing Timothy Lynch from the Charles River. They crawled over ice to pull him to safety, but Lynch later died of pneumonia at City Hospital.
A police officer was killed on Beach Street yesterday by an unknown assailant. The incident occurred near Station 19 and was noted in a group photo taken at a police baseball game at the National League grounds last summer.
Policeman Daniel J. F. Donovan of Roxbury Crossing station died after being struck in the face by a young man at the Beach and Hudson streets corner yesterday afternoon. Two women witnesses provided a description of the escaping assailant to police.
At about 6 PM Henry J Leavey 19 of 6 Cable street Jamaica Plain was arrested charged with larceny after being identified by two witnesses as the assailant who struck Patrolman Donovan. He was later charged with killing the policeman and held at Station 4. A second man 28 John Uoanmna of West End was held at Station 3 as a suspect, with further viewing by witnesses planned. Patrolman Donovan sought a leave of absence after his father Timothy Donovan died yesterday.
Bridgeport plans a centennial celebration for Phineas Taylor Barnum born July 5. City officials propose a joint event linking Barnum’s birthday with the spring opening of the new Congress Street bridge, a $300,000 project, as the showman’s legacy is marked.
Thomas W. Phillips aged 88, a wealthy Hudson farmer and grandnephew of Wendell Phillips, died after an oil can he was using while oiling a gasoline engine started accidentally. The can struck his face and he fell ill. his body was found later by an employee on his farm at 38 Lincoln Street.
The biennial convention of the Bricklayers and Masons International Union heard the treasurer Patrick Bowen report the total funds across reserve strike general and non union shop defence at 325000 The past year’s performance was called the best in his 380 years as treasurer The sessions were brief and tonight the convention hall will be in Symphony Hall.

Christine Louise Pfaff, former wife of Henry Pfaff, his Boston and Lexington brewer, failed to prove fraud or undue influence in signing away all claims to his $300000 estate. Judge Rugg of the Supreme Court affirmed the Probate Court ruling on appeal in Cambridge.
Mr. Pfaff died in 1906 leaving his entire estate to his second wife Louise C. Pfaff and their two children Gerhard H. and Agnes F. Pfaff, who have been in Germany since his death. The first Mrs. Pfaff, daughter of Geneva artist Hecking, divorced Pfaff in South Dakota and married Bogart, who recently killed himself. She is now the wife of Michael Cass of England.
Edward Hines, 45, of 276 Commercial Street, nearly suffocated after choking on meat at 59 Fleet Street. Patrolman Fitzgerald rushed him in a record-breaking trip to Relief Hospital where surgeons removed the meat from his throat. Doctors say he is likely to recover.
The milk and baby hygiene committee hosted a reception for Dr Milton J Rosenau at Mrs Mary M Kehews 29A Chestnut Street yesterday afternoon. Rosenau a Harvard Medical School instructor lectured on preventive medicine and has long supported the committee work.
Letters from attorneys indicate four nieces and two nephews in Brockton will share part of Mrs. Elizabeth Ross’s estate left from Pasadena California. One niece receives 200000 from the will. others named include Catherine A Coughlin Mary J Carey and M E K Cain Hannigan plus John and Michael McDevitt. Executors study the will and plan California travel to arrange interests.
William Chandler of Waltham a hotel guest at the Hotel Royal on Sudbury Street started a mattress fire in bed while smoking early this morning causing a stir among inmates. Fire was put out after an alarm from Box 21 at 1 00 o clock. Loss estimated at about 200 dollars.
A roof collapsed at a police station injuring several people. SADIE E MCINTYRE suffered fractures and possible rib injuries but walked after revival. MARGARET NEVILL to restore after jaw fracture and bruises. ANNIE LEARY left ankle and rib injuries. others sustained varied cuts, bruises, shocks, and sprains with many treated at the police station and sent home.
Thirteen girls at the Brigh ton telephone exchange on Wirt and Henshaw streets escaped death when more than five tons of plaster, steel netting, and iron girders collapsed at 1 pm yesterday, burying them at the switchboard and causing chaotic scenes as workers fled. continuation noted on page 8.
Paul Hastings Allen of this city won the first prize of $1000 for a symphony in D Major in the Paderewski competition for musical composition. The award was judged by George W. Chadwick of Boston Dr Horatio Parker of Yale and Frank Vander Stricken of Cincinnati.
The $10 000 prize fund established ten years ago by Paderewski supports American composers with three awards. The top prize of 1000 is for a symphony or large orchestral work, 900 for a chorus orchestral piece, and 500 for chamber music. Arthur Sheperd won the sole prize at the last competition. Paul Allen, a Boston pianist and violist, studied at Whitney International School of Music and Harvard before a career in Italy and Germany, returning to Boston for a recital in 1904 and later composing works including a symphony and an opera on a Sichfan subject.
