Mayor Fitzgerald will issue an order directing department heads to list extra pay separately from regular salaries to stop extensive extras graft at City Hall. The practice has led to clerks being paid for after hours and for periods beyond actual work, inflating city costs.
The Clyde Line steamer Cherokee, returning from Santo Domingo with many Dominicans aboard, ran ashore near South Brigantine life-saving station. Panic erupted as passengers begged to be rescued, but crew and life savers said they were not in danger. The ship remains aground and shows no damage, with little chance of drifting at high water.
Pure white recrystallized chemical camphor sold in one pound packages as an economical substitute for camphor carbolic acid and tar paper. It protects fabrics by repelling insects mildew and infection and can be sprinkled liberally then wrapped or stored. Odor disappears after airing. Price 15c per pound or 1.50 per dozen. Late last evening a petition for a new trial was filed with Judge Sherman by Vahey and Innes, lawyers for Charles L Tucker, who has fought to save him from execution in the murder of Mabel Page. The appeal cites new evidence that Tucker owned the Page pin, a corroborating witness about a theatre knife incident, an affidavit by Mrs. Grundy stating she was with Tucker and saw no excitement, and interviews with Amy Roberts and Edward Page at Weston.
In a second Superior Court session Judge Sherman overruled the attorney-general’s request to sentence Tucker today. The defense, led by J H Vahey and T E Vahey, argued for deposition of Edward Page and a commission to depose witnesses, including Benjamin F Allen who claims the pin Tucker is accused of stealing, and a photographer who viewed it. Amy Roberts testimony about the pin’s ownership was debated as a possible ground for a new trial.
Police in Stoneham found four half naked and half starved Murray children aged from infancy to early school age lying on the kitchen floor. The home at 29 Summer Street lacked food and heat. Neighbors took temporary charge as officers investigated conditions.
The parents of several neglected children were arrested for drunkenness after police found them in a room where little furniture remained to buy more liquor. Authorities will file neglect charges and the State Board of Charity after an investigation, while the children are likely to be placed in state care.
Police arrested a 16 year old office boy as the firebug believed to have started the fatal fire at the New England Reed Company's Green street establishment on December 21. Officials say they are pursuing incendiary origins in the blaze.
Albert W. Dears of 70 Poplar Street Chelsea was arrested after inspectors found matches on him following an incident at a downtown establishment. A fire on the shipping floor of a building caused the death of Raymond Pamfilo as employees tried to escape. Dears faces arraignment as investigators proceed.
The long missing Mrs. Margaret Bannon of 8 Mystic Avenue Somerville was found by her husband after a letter claimed she was detained elsewhere. She was located at 18 Winship Street Brighton, employed as a domestic. He thanked the Post for enabling the reunion and hoped for her recovery.
Lena de Franzo, 4, the Massachusetts General Hospital patient, suffered severe burns while rescuing her twin sister and baby sister from a house fire at her parents’ Leverett and Spring street home. Her mother, watching nearby, saved the other two children. Lena is out of serious danger but bears lifelong scars.

Aurelio Herrera defeated Young Corbett at the Pacific Athletic Club pavilion in Los Angeles, stopping the former champion after four rounds and part of the fifth. The scheduled 15 round bout ended early as Herrera showed speed and accuracy, with Corbett lacking force. Kid Herman was set to fight Herrera next, and Herrera issued challenges to Battling Nelson and Jimmy Britt.
District Attorney John B. Moran demands a hearing on removing the savings bank commissioners and accuses Governor Guild of petulance and shielding himself behind the attorney general in a reply to the governor’s letter. Gen Brigham, who resigned yesterday, is to be questioned in the communication to the governor.

He plans a hearing with Governor next Tuesday through attorney Auerbach and will question General Brigham about his prior Provident Bank ties as Gov Guild considers Brigham's resignation.

It details Moran’s reply to Guild’s criticism that the communication was left at the governor’s residence and printed as a newspaper flimsy, noting the letter was addressed to the man rather than the office.
