At 10 30 tonight the barkentine Altona, ashore all day, began to move and fired red distress signals from the stern. The Monomoy life saving station crew responded immediately to assist the vessel after it had been under way for several hours.
A barkentine’s hold holds five feet of water risking sinking while exhausted crew and life savers fear they cannot control the leaky hull. Altona’s captain, anchored four miles away, arranged watchful aid as signals were seen. Peter Eldridge led the station crew in keeper’s temporary absence amid a long row to reach the scene.
General William A. Bancroft was honored by the Second Brigade staff with a presentation of a sword and scabbard at a Victoria dinner. The general expressed gratitude for the gift, followed by informal remarks from attendees.

Cleveland January 11 bankers committee probing the Denison Prior and Co firm says bonds of a municipal nature appear forged and insolvency likely.
