Boston Harbor Improvements Highlighted by Major Raymond
Major Charles W. Raymond of the U S engineers discussed Boston Harbor before the Society of Arts. He traced systematic work since 1859 under the state harbor commission, noted the narrow upper channel requiring dredging, described sea walls around the lower harbor islands, and cited a total expenditure of 250000 dollars. He said the harbor has ample anchorage, safe entrances, and that ongoing improvements aim to maintain navigability amid dredging, wharf construction, and a 2000 acre expansion of the peninsular. A general survey of the lower harbor is planned for next season to guide further work.
