In Washington on January 7 the senate resumed consideration of the interstate commerce bill. Senator Bayard urged delaying further action for now, preferring to await the house measure and noting concern at concentrating power in five commissioners. Senator Ingalls criticized delay and urged prompt action, defending senate consideration and warning against a do nothing approach. Bayard defended avoiding time waste and claimed no personal suspicion in the senate.
Washington Jan 7 The House devoted most of its session to the interstate commerce bill with a motion by Mr O Neill to strike the section prohibiting railroads from charging more for a short haul. Debates featured Mr Reagan Mr Phelps and others as amendments were discussed including writs of mandamus and removal to federal courts. A lively exchange between Phelps and Reagan followed with personal remarks about wealth and railroad investment in Texas. Senator West objects to being ridiculed.
Bay Roberts Orangemen removed arches and flags as Redemptorist fathers began mission work in Bay Roberts and St Johns. Frs Delargy and McGivern said threats and a knife were used, prompting US consul and Newfoundland governor telegraphs. Warship Tennessee arrived, archs down, mission completed amid hostile crowds, praised perseverance of two unarmed missionaries.
Arnoald C. Stacy, 33, owner of Crystal mineral spring property near Barn Maine, was shot dead at dinner by his wife during a family quarrel. She says he grabbed the barrel as she fired, bullet entering his head. Sheriff and Chief of Police investigated. coroner's inquest planned. no arrest yet.
A telegram reports an armed mob from Gettysburg arrived in Forest City and seized public records by force, tearing out parts of the building. The sheriff leads an armed pursuit as a potential clash looms, with threats of bloodshed if records are not returned by tomorrow. An estimated 150 armed men may raid Gettysburg tonight to reclaim the records.
In San Francisco on January 7 the Masonic Cemetery association sues ex-Senator Sharon and others for grave desecration. A witness testified a misleading item was placed on a grave during the divorce trial as a supposed love token. Health officials had the grave opened to determine if such articles were deposited, and the suit seeks $5000 in damages.
The Railway Age reports 1884 foreclosures in the United States totaled 750 miles of property with bonded debt of 9,501,660 and capital stock of 13,915,000, plus total stock and debt of 23,501,000. Over nine years 306 sales drained 25,553 miles with 1,499,550,000 in stock and debt.
Springfield report states William J. Campbell, Republican, was chosen Senate president by 26 to 25 with Senator Ruger aligning with Republicans. In the House, Haines secured 76 votes for temporary chairman, one short of the needed total, and he voted against himself. After filibustering, the House adjourned until tomorrow.
Denver officials report the legislature convened with James Moynihan of Park named senate president and Thomas B. Stuart of Arapahoe elected house speaker. A U S senate race begins January 20 with candidates including Senator Hill Secretary Tele Roult and ex senator Jerome Baffee.

Easton police report John Varek, a Lehigh Valley trackwalker, was attacked by three tramps at Py Run. They robbed him of a watch and money, stripped him, bound him, and inflicted injuries possibly causing death. They fled as a Western express train approached.
A Fall River dispatch reports Richard Shuttleworth, once employed at Troy cotton and woollen manufactory, filed suit seeking 10000 dollars in damages for injuries alleged to have been caused by defective machinery.
Official report records 900 dead in Granada with Madrid and Malaga aftershocks causing panic and slow relief work. Loja sustains 800 damaged houses, King Alfonso funds relief, 300000 dollars pledged. Processions, food shortages, and widespread instability mark the disaster period.

Scranton reports Mrs Oscar Hendricks of South Abington Massachusetts drank muriatic acid aiming to die. She survived initial hours but suffers extreme stomach gangrene and death looms. Motivation arose from husband’s mortgage foreclosure and money troubles. Hendricks is sole child of wealthy New Milford Connecticut parents.
Philadelphia January 7: a special meeting of Eastern league directors was held to resolve failure to organize an eastern league club in Baltimore. Mr Diddlebork of Philadelphia was authorized to pick among applicant clubs. Hartford or Troy likely to be elected.
Baknet reports from Lancaster Dover Norfolk and Thomasville detail several fires. At Harnish station near Quarryville a Standard Oil line leak sparked a major blaze with heavy loss. Whitehouse block in Gonie burned, eight thousand dollar loss, tenants Yeaton Co Hill and Tiger engine company uninsured. A four story brick building housing Edwards Voight Co. burned in Norfolk with forty thousand dollars loss. In Thomasville stores of Goldstone and Davis and buildings of McIntyre and Hayes Levy destroyed, total loss twenty seven thousand dollars.
A Boston theatre advertised for 150 supers to act in Richard III with Mr Keene. About 200 to 300 men lined up at Mason Street, typical democratic crowd, eager for 25 cents per performance, with chaos at the ticket dispenser and several redhair attempts to gain entry. After 70 men were chosen the doors closed and the rest dispersed. One excited spectator called the event the bloodiest blastedest gang ever struck in Humerica.
Greensburg dispatch reports English detectives finding a rumored secret dynamiter society in this county. The group allegedly mirrors Mollie Maguires, with a funded treasury and ties to recent English explosions and assassinations. Irwin is pointed as a potential headquarters and English agents reportedly collected evidence for Washington.
In Livingston County Kentucky a raid on a saloon led to a prolonged gun battle as deputies tried to arrest James and Henry Burton for aiding illegal whiskey traffic. The Burtons surrendered then James died attempting escape. shooting continued for hours wounding several including Judge Bullock.
William Fallon fell two feet in Curtis & Pope lumber yard on Albany Street and was taken to city hospital with probable internal injuries. Margaret Dowd, 40, on South Street near Lincoln, was struck and run over by a team from Federal Street, sustaining a leg laceration and scalp wound. A sneak thief stole clothing valued at $2695 from W. H. Murphy’s Broadway home, while Dennis B. Hill’s home was looted of about $30 in clothes. John Mulcahy was arrested for larceny of clothing and $40 from 86 Washington Street, Charlestown.
Probated will of Clarissa C. Peck allocates 395000 to relatives and others while the bulk of an estate valued at 400000 to 500000 funds a Chicago home for incurables. Specific bequests include 10000 to Old People’s Home of Chicago, 10000 to American Sunday School Union, 10000 to Lake Forest University, 10000 to Second Presbyterian Church for mission schools, and 10000 to the Board of Homes Missionaries of the Presbyterian Church in the United States.
PORTLAND Ore Jan 7 Anthony Sellers and John Kish were found frozen to death on the road to Nehalem in Tillamook county bringing the storm toll to seven direct deaths.
In Bangor on January 7 a series of experiments and ice field examinations were conducted. W C Pitman C J Marston H P Sargent and E J K Stetson representing about 75 000 tons or nearly half the probable cut say reports of ice damage from the recent fire are greatly exaggerated and question whether ice was hurt at all.
About 250 sat to dinner as President Richardson led a long evening of speech and music. Rev. Edward Everett Hale praised the association as a great educational institution and the role of commerce in civilization. Hon. Charles J. Noyes called for broader American influence and a reserve fund for future needs. Other speakers included John Haskell Butler Col. G Luke and guests from Boston Chicago and Sherbrooke. Lotus club performances closed a highly praised event.
The Cambridgeport Union hall hosted the thirteenth annual Cambridge police relief association ball on Wednesday evening with all couples present. A grand promenade concert ran from 8 to 9 featuring Brown's brigade band conducted by H. Brown. A long list of officers and committees assisted as reception and floor directors, guiding 20 dance numbers.
