School committee to meet to organize Monday evening

The school committee will meet next Monday evening in the Mason street building for the purpose of organizing. In the United States commissioner's court Wednesday, John Murphy was held in 206 for further examination on a charge of passing a counterfeit half-dollar. At the annual meeting of the Christian Scientists' association, Mrs. Mary B. G. Eddy was elected president, Miss Mary B. Mourn treasurer, Arthur T. Buswell secretary, Mrs. Lillian S. Walker of Dedham filed a $100,000 breach of promise suit against James Deshon who denies the claim and plans to contest in superior court. The estate of the late Hon. F. B. Hayes appraised at $1,209,651.21 with real estate $1,031,500. Buildings 172 and 196 Washington street $190,000. 627 and 631 Washington street $150,000. Van Rensselaer hotel $110,600. Dorchester avenue and First street wharf $120,000. the deceased’s Lexington farm $40,000. Robert Trest Paine Jr. to give second in the Ethics course at the Y M C A Union this Thursday evening on Benevolence. Dr. George H. Monks to give second in Emergency Course Friday evening on wounds burns and bandaging. Attendees urged. Annual Meeting of the New England Genealogical Society

The New England Genealogical Society held its annual meeting at 18 Somerset street. President Marshall P. Wilder delivered his eighteenth address, urging immediate building expansion funded by subscriptions totaling $25,000. The society reports assets over $100,000 since his term began, 425 resident and 305 life members, total 733 active. Officers were elected for the coming year, with Wilder reelected president and a slate including Willsveen, Walker, Richards, and Bartett among others.

Legislature Caucuses Name Officers and Elect Speakers

Both branches quickly organized with republican caucuses selecting leadership. In the Senate, 83 members met as the president presided while Albert E. Pillsbury was nominated by acclimation. The House caucus debated a speaker and clerk nominees with J Q A Brackett winning the speaker ballot and E A McLaughlin elected clerk. Committees were appointed to shape session proceedings.

Anoual Waiters Ball in Music Hall Honors Brown & Parrell's Employees

The twenty second annual waiters protective benevolent association ball drew 400 couples to Music Hall on Wednesday night. A grand march opened the festivities with Higgins conducting the orchestra and a lively display of colored bunting and portraits of leading figures. The Berkeley ball event for Brown, Darrell & Co. followed, with 75 couples joining 13 dances to J. Howard Richardson’s music and a well organized reception and floor staff.

Bank cashier jailed for $12200 theft from railroads

Alfred Oliver, 31, cashier for the Eastern railroad transferred funds to Boston and Maine accounts, confessed to stealing $12,200 after hiding funds in an attic trunk. He claimed living beyond his means, altering doors to avoid detection, and said the trunk was later found. Oliver, married with three children, is from Lynn and connected to several local fraternal orders.

Coffee Party and Prize Drawing at Mechanics Building

A grand coffee party and combination prize drawing under the St. Mary's Infant asylum fair was held in the Mechanics Building on Huntington Avenue with over 2500 attendees. Prizes went to John Linnehan for the boy winner and Maggie Flynn for the girl winner for selling the most combination tickets, with 3848 and 2431 tickets sold respectively. Higgins' band provided music as dancing ran 9 to 2, and prize drawings followed between dances with items including a piano, sealskin sacque, gold watch, silk suit, gents suit, a kitchen range, and $100 in gold.

First Snow Slide Reported in Gunnison Country
