Sixty three enlisted men and officers of the third regiment will attend the Inauguration exercises in Washington on March 4. The excursion costs total 14000 dollars with each man contributing 150 dollars and any shortfall to be made up by subscription.
A Marshfield Ore dispatch dated December 4 reports the seam tug Sol Thomas boiler exploded killing six aboard. The captain and others are missing. the vessel is wrecked and bodies have not yet been recovered.
Albany dispatch reports the assembly organized swiftly with oathings and a vote for speaker. Gov Cleveland resigns to Lieut. Gov Hill who accepts and will assume duties. Hill's message praises Cleveland administration and urges building law reforms, corporate powers checks, and humane justice methods.
In Augusta on January 6 the Republican senate caucus chose Kimbel of Bath as chairman with Pennell Lewiston for president and Tilden of Holowell as clerk. The House caucus backed Heath of Augusta as chairman with Hamlin of Farmington for speaker. Democrats named Moore of Laconia as speaker. Lincoln county backed Smith for councillor while Somerset backed Hixby with Sands likely to win from Sebec. Burleigh leads for treasurer and Gallagher solid in Somerset for adjutant general contest remains heated.

In Hartford on January 6 Martin Harrison and George Gregory were arraigned in superior court on a manslaughter charge for Ada Brown’s October death. Gregory claims Harrison killed Brown and cut his own throat. Harrison says Gregory did the cutting. The court denied a motion to try the cases separately. adjournment set for tomorrow.

North Adams Massachusetts reports a gas main leak on Eagle street caused an explosion under T F Loftus's grocery. Plumber Walter Allen suffered severe facial burns as the piazza blew off and two fires burned in the building before being put out. Gas shut off townwide. mills and stores closed by 4 pm. town left in darkness except for 12 electric lights.
