About 300 guests attended the National Lancers Armory event last evening for the Twenty-First Reunion of the Lancers' Veteran Charitable Association. Captain H. D. A telegram from Flagg's Cove Grand Manan reports the seizure by customs officers of the Eastport schooner George Linwood. It is believed the vessel is charged with an infraction of revenue laws.
An alarm from Box 536 reported a slight fire in the sewer department tool house on Ashland Street with unknown cause and minor damage. A still alarm at 54 Devonshire Street cited burning coals as the cause with no damage. A fourth alarm from 12 and 14 Bromfield Street a merchant tailor shop sustained $700 total losses from a gas jet igniting a lace curtain with steel and building damage.
Mansfield New York and New Orleans report separate blazes. In Mansfield district No 5 a schoolhouse fire caused 2500 in damage, insured 1500 by Attleboro. Corntne’s Brown block burned in New York with Champney Bros dry goods store and post office, 40000 loss, mail destroyed. Iberville parish Central sugar house and General Meyer's refinery burned in Louisiana, loss 100000.
The interior secretary L Q C Lamar and Mrs. Henrietta Dean Holt wed at 10 am in Macon on Orange Street. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. W H Virgin and others. The bride wore gray silk with old point lace and diamonds from General Holt. The couple left for Atlanta and then Oxford before going to Washington.
A Cleveland despatch cites possible intoxication of the freight train engineer and blames the conductors for encroaching on the express schedule in the Baltimore and Ohio wreck near Tiffin. Miller Robert McAdoo, an eyewitness, describes passengers fleeing as flames burst from the smoker and the front car collapsed in the collision.
In Hartford on January 5 the Connecticut Legislature organized choosing H W R Hoyt of Greenwich as House Speaker with 137 votes to 99 for Democrat Clinton B Davis. Senate officers named R J Walsh president pro tem and Austin Brainard as clerk. State canvass showed no majority for state officers, ranking E S Cleveland and Phineas C Lounsbury as top two. Joint ballot set for Thursday with 31 Republican edge ensuring Republican state officers’ election. Governor Lounsbury to give inaugural message about 2 PM.
Benjamin Franklin Brooks of Boston died suddenly at West Newton after a day in his Boston office. Born October 26 1818 in Sturbridge he pursued Amherst College law studies and a long career in bankruptcy and commercial law, forming Brooks & Ball then practicing alone before partnering with Nichols. He leaves a widow two daughters and a Harvard College student son.
Three men were arrested and charged with the murder of a former milk route proprietor from East Somerville. A decapitated body parts and bloodstained clothing were found along a Lexington road, with investigators tracing the crime to a location between Lexington and Somerville.
A Somerville police despatch details the discovery of Codman’s clothes in Lexington and a rapid series of arrests. Eddie Nowlan, a milk route worker, is jailed as an accessory, while two other men are held as main suspects. evidence includes bloodstains on clothing and a recovered $300 from Codman’s money box. Miss Jennie Fisher confirms Codman’s relationship with Thatcher family and identifies the Lexington garments. Codman, who moved to Somerville last summer, ran a milk business and had a brother in Charlestown.
Miss Anna Lyman’s coming out at Berkeley Hall drew about 600 guests hosted by her aunt Miss Florence Lyman. The event featured the Boston Cadet Band at 10 30 for the grand march, white satin and lilac decor, and a supper table with candela bras and Catherine Mermets ferns.
New York January 5 Judge Pratt who spared ex Alderman McQuade an immediate trip to Sing Sing is ill and unlikely to rule in the stay of proceedings case for some time.
Aveusta Me Jan 5 A Republican Legislative caucus nominated Eugene Wale for United States Senator with Colonel F N Dow presenting the name for Cumberland and eastern Maine. Lewis A Barker seconded the nomination for the fourth district and Hale was unanimously chosen after a brief address.
The State agrees to receive 5,000,000 in bonds and 6,000,000 in common stock from the Hoosac Tunnel transfer. The deal, based on an 1886 act to consolidate railroads, is effectively a consolidation. Ratification rests with Fitchburg Railroad stockholders before Feb. 1.
Massachusetts boards back consolidation of the Troy and Greenfield line with the Fitchburg Railroad and Hoosac Tunnel. The commission endorses the proposed agreement and urges prompt action to effect the consolidation, with provisions for state director representation and required legislative authorization. The terms call for a February 1 1887 consolidation deadline and stockholder ratification.
