A Baltimore & Ohio express from New York to Chicago collides with an eastbound freight near Republic Ohio. Sixty five passengers were aboard the express and many are killed or burned. Rescue work is underway as the wreck is described in detail with names of survivors and victims.
Morning dispatches report the Modoc Express wreck near Springfield with one dead and many injured, a Baltimore & Ohio collision near Tiffin, and prices or actions on rail lines including the Troy & Boston purchase. Also noted are Senate plans on the interstate commerce bill, adjournment for John A Logan, and various legal cases across New England and New York.
The Irish National League doubts Goschen can save the ministry. Dublin trials end. A Paris arrested woman linked to large swindling schemes. Spain warns of retaliation if a treaty fails in Congress. Rumors swirl of a new French ministry. Lord Northbrook agrees to join Goschen. Irish tenants resist eviction. Massachusetts Horticultural Society lists prizes. Local stock market dull and weak with some specialties holding. Jay Gould reportedly secures controlling interest in Little Rock and Fort Smith. Largest Cambridge railroad stockholder sells to outsiders, giving them control.
The Modoc from Albany wrecked near Mitteneague station injuring eighteen and killing a man burned to ashes. Fire destroyed the baggage mail car and a passenger coach. several injured passengers were cared for as doctors and firefighters responded.
A train collision left Conductor Chapin with a cut head and back strain while Bag gage Master Smith and an unnamed passenger suffered bruises. All are being cared for and expected to recover in a short time.
Springfield dispatch reports the Boston and Albany Mitteneague wreck case where four passengers remain seriously hurt with families aiding them. Rail work clears tracks by noon as the cause is traced to a wandering wheel on the tender that bent rails, damaged switches, and the engine. Debris includes two tons of mail and burned sacks. losses around $40,000.
Three men on the wrecked train reached Boston with harrowing accounts. One survivor described being hurled across a seat as splinters flew and a stove shattered, causing a fire. Another passenger, lawyer Charles P. Searle, recounted the West Springfield collision and ensuing inferno, with people injured and cars damaged. Mail officials reported destroyed pouches and burned paper, while Gladstone letters touched Irish policy and Liberal unity amid party tensions.
London January 4 The cabinet council is postponed as party jealousies delay Goschen appointments. Lord Iddesleigh plans retirement citing ill health while Viscount Cross remains undecided. Northbrook consents to join Goschen in the cabinet with portfolio undecided. Morley and Lansdowne favored. Salisbury vexed by newspaper gossip.
Two English women, Mrs Linsay and Miss Eveline Rappy, are jailed in Paris on a swindling charge. Rappy, 25, used marriage schemes with ads to charm Frenchmen and extract wedding gifts before fleeing with valuables. Linsay allegedly guided the deception, aiding the ruse and keeping control over Rappy.
In Deru on January 4, bailiffs enforcing evictions at Achill were pelted with stones by residents, forcing the eviction stop. Several arrests were made. After a tenant eviction at Athenry, neighbors maltreated both bailiffs and the landlord.
The jury resumed hearings in Durain on January 4 against Dillon, O'Brien, Sheehy, Harris, Crilly and Redmond accused of conspiring to receive rents as trustees under the plan of campaign. All defendants were present except one.
The Birmingham Post reports Sir William Vernon Harcourt Lord Herschell Mr Morley Mr Chamberlain and Sir G Trevelyan will likely meet next week to discuss the Irish question in a free manner. No binding proposals will be submitted. Gladstone will not attend personally but Lord Herschell is expected to provide tact and moderation. Lord Salisbury has asked the Marquis of Lansdowne in Canada to join if willing.
Paris reports a conference with President Grévy and ministers Ferry and Freycinet aimed at quickly dissolving the present ministry and forming a Ferry Freycinet cabinet. Ferry is said to back Freycinet as Grévy’s successor. Radicals oppose the plan amid tense political moves.
Maprio Jan 4 reports that a US Congress rejection of the new treaty with Spain would trigger a 25 percent import duty and push efforts to secure new European markets for West Indian exports. Spanish statesmen from all parties view growing US ties with Cuba and Porto Rico with unease and jealousy.
Dupuy reports at the National League executive committee meeting that speakers ridicule Goschen accepting the chancellorship as saving the Conservative ministry. The treasurer notes $25,000 in donations to the League from the United States in the past two weeks.
London reports that the 1884 limits on trans shipping American cattle along the Thames have been removed marking a policy change and new trade access.
Brussels reports that thirty-seven miners were killed by a blast in the Mons coal pit on January 4.
London reports Parliament prorogued until Jan 27. In Paris the French legation at Tokyo burned with archives lost. Constantinople notes the Porte inviting M. Zankolt to explain Bulgaria situation.
The state board of arbitration resumes hearing on wage disputes at H. B. Reed & Co factory. Men seek higher pay in crimping edging and nailing departments while Reed argues at most 75 cents more per case and alignment with Knights of Labor limits. Evidence shows varied weekly earnings among workers and competing shops with higher prices in other towns.
All collieries shipping via New Jersey Central railroad in the Wilkes-Barre area are idle except two due to a Port Johnson and Elizabethport dock strike. Red Ash and Hanover mines operate briefly to fill existing orders then shut down, leaving about 8,100 workers unemployed across Lehigh and Wilkes Barre, Hanover, Red Ash, Kennett, and Parrish mines.
Cincinnati report says 17 year old W W Watkins employed by Jacob Peake the printer admitted embezzling funds and asked for his father to cover the loss. While waiting his father's arrival he swallowed prussic acid and died within minutes. He had two poison vials and reportedly bought books and skates with the stolen money.
New York January 4 The United States grand jury in Brooklyn indicted Charles Ogden Fervis alias Sir Roger Tichborne for fraudulently obtaining a pension from the SS by claiming wartime injuries If convicted he will face trial in San Francisco as the next step.
George E. Chickering of Lawrence has been elected superintendent of public schools succeeding the resigning John L. Brewster. The appointment marks a shift in Lawrence school leadership as Chickering assumes the post.
A freight train, after stopping near Scipio to let an eastbound express pass, proceeded toward Republic despite lacking orders. Conductor Fletcher faced a fast approaching locomotive driven by Lem Eastman. the engineer jumped for safety as the collision risk became clear, while his fireman William Fredericks fled to safety.
Charles P Toll of Detroit recounts the crash of Baltimore & Ohio limited express No 5 near Republic and Tiffin. The freight engine stalled, the express telescoped into the baggage car, fire followed, the fireman died, Eastman the engineer was injured, and wreck victims and residents aided the burning cars.
In Emma New York at 3 am the west bound Erie express crashed into an engine carrying seven men. Conductor Wheeler suffered a broken collarbone, Engineer Wallace and Fireman Griffin, Express Messenger Cromwell and a brakeman were badly bruised. Two engines and an express car wrecked. West track blocked nine hours. Painted Post delay after another wreck with cars burned injuring Hi Mann.
In Augusta Maine January 4 the House caucus selected J H Flagg of Portland as chairman and E P Ryder as secretary. Nominated by acclamation were C E Littlefield Speaker and others for clerk assistants and messengers. Senate caucus nominated Marble for president with G N Tilden secretary and aides.
