Man seek fiat coinage from Philadelphia mint
In Philadelphia on January 4 1891 Judge Harley Morse and George Merrick of Denver presented a brick of silver weighing 514.8 ounces fine at the United States Mint demanding coinage into dollars. Mint superintendent Bosbyshell refused the private coinage and provided a written certificate. Morse and Merrick cite seigniorage and constitutional right. The dispute centers on government bullion purchases and the difference between market value and legal tender, with the men pursuing court testing of the government’s denial.
