Atlantic Coast Swept by Tremendous Storm

A violent coastal storm battered the Atlantic coast with snow inland and high seas. Reports from New Jersey Long Island and upstate sources described widespread damage and injuries including eleven hurt in Philadelphia from a factory collapse. Navy officials monitored fleet safety while several vessels were distressed and some drownings were suspected near Wilmington. Sandy Hook endured the fiercest waves in years and harbor traffic suffered as life saving measures and rescues were enacted.

Boston and New York Storm Toll Mounts With Widespread Damage

A north east gale battered New England and New York area, toppling trees wires and signs, injuring several, blowing over a Brooklyn painter, and washing out a Hudson Valley track. In Boston the storm caused power outages, collapsed structures, and ships dragged anchors as ferries halted and embers of damage spread across multiple cities.

Wind Rips Through Pennsylvania Delaware and New Jersey

A Jan 38 storm in Philadelphia and surrounding states brings 66 mph winds, toppling buildings and trees and injuring eleven in a four story factory collapse. Many shed ruins on Westmoreland street harbor more uninjured. A woman loses a handbag and $48 is blown away as a truck is blown off Walnut street bridge.

Severe Gale Strikes Narragansett Bay in Bristol

Narragansett Bay endured the severest gale in 25 years with winds 75 to 90 mph. High tides caused dock and seawall damage in Bristol and Barrington, flooding streets and undermining a railroad line. Utilities were knocked out. a powerboat was wrecked and a ferry service suspended as the Saga mo remains unable to land at Bristol.

Think Jennings Ran as Mrs Donovan Died

A Boston area police story links prizefighter James B. Jennings known as Kid Carter to the death of Mildred Donovan and to a late night street walk in Malden. Police cite sightings on Chelsea bound cars, a Lynn street encounter, and Jennings’s display of money before the fatal events. They note his previous highway robbery charges, epilepsy theory, and survivor accounts while awaiting the medical examiner’s report before changing theory.

Wireless Station Knocked Out By Gale At Rivers Island

A severe gale lashed Beaufort and area causing minor harbor damage while the topmast of the Rivers Island wireless station was blown off, briefly taking the station out of service. Weather conditions remained violent through the night with shipping largely unhurt.

Man shoots at home then attempts suicide in Pittsfield

Stanley Smith a General Electric employee fired a shot into his chest at 32 Kellogg Street driving his wife and children from the home. He was intoxicated and taken to the police station where he revived. He was later moved to the House of Mercy where recovery is expected.
