Cephalonia Strikes Rock Off Holyhead and Returns to Port
The Cunard steamer Cephalonia from Boston struck a rock near South Stack at 7:30 am in fog. Passengers were evacuated in a lifeboat but later returned to the ship as she backed off and proceeded to Liverpool, finally beaching at New Harbor Holyhead. The ship’s hold flooded slightly. cabin passengers J Gordon McEdward and others were aboard with 52 intermediate and 175 steerage travelers disembarked at Queenstown for Liverpool. The vessel, a 5517 ton iron screw with electric lighting, was built in 1882 by Laird Bros. The British Queen assisted with a pump at Holyhead.
