Toll Call Rates to Be Higher in New England Phone Plan

The Public Service Commission will hold a public hearing on New England Telephone and Telegraph Company proposed rate changes. The plan replaces person to person with station to station calls, adds charges for operators when the called party is unavailable, and proposes messenger fees for non subscribers. More than 85 percent of toll calls in the state would face sizable increases, says PSC director William H. O’Brien.

Radical change in toll service rules set by Postmaster

The Public Service Commission says the new schedule, ordered by the Postmaster General on Dec 13 and effective Jan 21, expedites a station to station toll system. It cites potential rate increases, a report charge, a messenger fee, and a distance measure by airline miles, with a public hearing planned to explain changes and revenue implications.
