The Northern Pacific steamer makes a shore landing with 2480 troops after striking a sand bar off Fire Island. Returning heroes include 1700 ill or wounded to be landed today as seas run high but the vessel is reported not in immediate danger.
The American transport Northern Pacific carrying 2480 wounded soldiers sailors and nurses ran aground at Fire Island in dense rain and fog at 3 30 this morning. Navy officers reported the vessel firmly grounded but said relatives need not fear for those aboard.
President Wilson plans to reach the Italian frontier tomorrow morning and travel by a royal train to Rome. At Turin and Genoa he will be greeted by city officials, then arrive in Rome Friday at 10 30 am to be welcomed by the King Queen and Italian authorities.
