Fire damages Cambridge Coach Co premises sparing Harvard square plan

A fire at 12:30 yesterday afternoon damaged the Cambridge Coach Company buildings at 36 and 38 Church Street, causing about 25000 dollars in damage. Rapid fire department work and wet structures prevented wider loss amid plans by the Harvard Square Business Men's Association to beautify Harvard Square with a 1.5 million dollar reconstruction. The blaze harmed 30 to 40 carriages on the second floor and nearly wrecked a limousine on the first floor.

Harvard President Uses Orders to Halt Lectures During Cambridge Fire

President Lowell of Harvard directed lectures to end by 1 PM to keep over a thousand students from the blaze in their classrooms. Frustrated by other students crowding Church street, firefighters faced obstruction as the coach house on the first floor burned, threatening nearby wooden structures along a 200 yard line. Charles H. Lake, former Cambridge official, was severely burned while helping battle the flames, and chauffeur Ruel Jackson aided by using extinguishers as the fire spread from the auto backfire. Assistant Chief Casey ordered the second and third alarms as the building, the Sar gent Gymnasium, was consumed. the structure housed the origin of Cambridge social functions and local lodges.
