China Was Seized Off Shanghai Sparks US Protest

The China was five days out from Shanghai when stopped by a British cruiser about ten days ago. Thirty eight passengers were transferred to the warship. The State Department demands an explanation from Great Britain over the removal of these passengers from an American merchant vessel. Washington maintains no person may be taken from an American ship and notes the China was bound for San Francisco, arguing against Britain’s claim they were German reservists en route to Germany. The protest follows prior cases where authorities secured releases as a matter of US favor, not legal obligation, and calls for a definite understanding with Britain.
