The notice reports a German warning that any belligerent ship carrying armament will be sunk with no delay or immunity. It notes submarine commanders already instructed and many have sailed for posts in a campaign beginning Wednesday, basing action on British orders to merchant captains to attack submarines.
Gertrude Bell, 25, of 7 Cross Street Somerville attempted death by taking poison on the steps of her lover’s home after believing she had been jilted. She rang the doorbell and collapsed into the arms of the young man’s mother as the door opened. Doctors may save her life.
A young woman attempted suicide by swallowing contents of a glass vial at 158 Walnut Street after a quarrel with Manley Blaney. She was taken to Somerville City Hospital with serious but hopeful signs of recovery. Earlier, she had engaged in a prior acid incident with Raymond Gammons, injuring his gloves and clothing.
Daniel Dewey of 1240 Beacon Street sustained fractures of both bones of the left leg after slipping on the pavement near the B A A clubhouse last evening.
The International Union of Pavers and Rammers and related trades in Boston announces initiation fees for non union pavers. Fee rises from 10 to 25 by April second, with current pay set at 5 per day. Contact Fortunato Pistorine at 176 North Street for information.
London reports from February 27 say the Meuse valley fighting near Verdun continues with no major change in fortunes. Germany has captured two French positions Champneuville and Hardaumont near the Douaumont fort, indicating a slowed German advance after severe losses.
German claims include 15000 unwounded French prisoners and capture of Cote de Talou near Douaumont, though gunfire may have rendered the position untenable. French assaults threaten Douaumont while Woevre posts withdraw. Reinforcements move to Verdun as British lines extend in Belgium and France.
The two masted schooner Helen G. King of Boston laden with coal sank today at noon in the Cape Cod Canal about a mile west of Bourne. An accident to her steering gear caused the vessel to strike rocks and go down with four crew members saved. the canal is likely to be out of commission until the ship is raised.
The report notes Curley and Fitzgerald reconciled after a split over the Wilson trip. It cites Curley returning from the South and stating the country stands with President Wilson. The article frames the rift as resolved and emphasizes unified national support.

The steamer near Shakspere Cliff after passing Admiralty pier at Dover suffered a catastrophic explosion and listed to port. High seas hampered the captain’s attempt to beach her as the engine room flooded and the vessel became unmanageable. Dozens of craft rushed to aid while the Empress of Fort William sank after striking a mine nearby. Maloja’s crew evacuated with boats already swung out.
President Wilson told Gridiron Club members that the United States should remain neutral in the European conflict, sacrificing all but its sense of humanity and justice. He warned against rash action and urged restraint until a clear right to strike appears, noting valor lies in prudence. Continued on Page 5.

Washington reports Germany flatly refused US demands on submarine warfare. Berlin says it will begin sinking all armed ships of nations at war after Tuesday at midnight. Berlin advises that submarine commanders have final instructions and some have already sailed. The US maintains merchant ships armed only for defense are not armed ships under international law. A rupture with Germany appears likely.

A general alarm blaze at 75 Main Street Holyoke destroyed the three story building housing the C F Sullivan Company and damaged the Hotel Lawlor and the George J Appinger cigar factory. One hotel guest escaped as flames threatened neighboring structures with total damage estimated between 35000 and 40000 dollars.
About 7 o clock a fire burned in the rear of the Sullivan building where steam fittings are made. Flames raced through the building prompting a second alarm and then a general alarm. The blaze spread to the Hotel Lawler and Appinger factory, both drenched with water. Ten minutes after discovery the Lawler was filled with smoke and Frank Spencer was rescued from the third floor. Loss in the Sullivan building is $15,000 to $20,000. the Hotel Lawler loss about $10,000 from water and smoke.
More than 60 tenants were awakened as a blaze destroyed the Hotel Magnolia on Essex Street in Lawrence. Three alarms brought fire crews. the fire began in a store beneath the hotel and spread to an adjacent shop. Lodgers fled in their night clothes, suffering from the cold until they could be moved to the Needham House. The damaged property belonged to David F. McCarthy and John Bird. the lodging house was run by Mrs. Deroches.
