Trees and telegraph poles uprooted, windows broken, signs and chimneys toppled under a fierce windstorm that swept Boston and nearby areas yesterday. The day shifted from late spring heat to a raging snowstorm by afternoon, with thunder and lightning.
A severe blizzard sweeps northern New England and the central West as the Ivernia is delayed at quarantine and the Boston liner arrives late. Winds reach 50 mph in Boston, with higher gusts offshore. New York reports 96 miles, New London 80, and Gloucester over 80. Debris blocks streets and telegraph lines fall in many areas. At least five deaths are attributed to the storm as it weakens over the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Kansas City dispatch reports Governor Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey responding to Colonel Roosevelts recent statement. Wilson says his hat has been in the ring for some time and his head has been in it as well, reacting to Roosevelts remarks made last night to W. F. Firick in Cleveland.
President Taft plans a reply to Colonel Roosevelt's Columbus address. He will not attack Roosevelt directly but will present a clear clash between his political creed and Roosevelt's. Administration officials refuse to discuss the Columbus speech.
The President plans a series of engagements between now and March's end. He will visit Toledo for a Chamber of Commerce address and then continue to Chicago and New York as part of a broader tour. Taft seeks to respond to Roosevelt while outlining his positions on initiative, referendum, and recalls.
Miss Eileen De Roche of 7 Sheridan Street Jamaica Plain eloped Tuesday evening with New Orleans born Baylin to Jersey City New Jersey where they were married. She had recently left a Washington Street department store to pursue a stage career.
Mrs Boylan formerly Miss De Roche says she is married. She and Mr Boylan wed in Jersey City and will travel to New York City or Troy, New York, to join him. The statement was made after she returned home to Jamaica Plain.
In Columbus Ohio Roosevelt invoked a medieval sport metaphor to signal his readiness to fight. He compared knights casting down gauntlets to English yeomen tossing their casters into the ring as a sign of combat, linking his hat in the ring to feared rivals in the old prize game.

Lawrence February 22. A clash between the children's relief committee and police and military authorities is feared as the committee plans to send 200 children from the city to New York and Philadelphia despite orders from Colonel E LeRoy Sweetser and Acting City Marshal John J. Sullivan.
Marshal Sullivan declared there will be no more children allowed to leave Lawrence until police confirm they cannot be stopped. He vowed to use all legal resources to prevent showing children on streets for money or other purposes and to use force if needed. Six children, four Armenian and two Portuguese from Methuen Pleasant Valley, were taken to North station to be shipped to Bridgeport, Conn but officers intervened before boarding.
At a Lawrence mills treasurers meeting yesterday Edwin F. Greene of Pacific Mills said no mill owners would attend the conciliation committee conference. He added there was no reason for arbitration, calling the strike practically over and predicting workers would return to their old terms.

George Andres 22 of 7 Bulfinch Street was fatally shot at the shooting gallery connected with the Nickelodeon at 57 Hanover Street about 10 o clock last night. Luigi Prisco 24 of High Street Dedham is held at City Hall Station charged with the shooting.
Andres, a Syrian Nickelodeon employee, was shot in the back during an argument with Prisco who demanded use of a rifle. Prisco fled, was chased by police and rioters, and was detained after officers recovered a revolver and razor. Andres died soon after reaching Relief Hospital.

A gasoline explosion at Dean Falcony's barber shop at 2599 Massachusetts Avenue North Cambridge ignited a fire carried by a gusty east wind. ProvincetownFeb 22 Captain R A Dobbin of the schooner Francis B Sawyer drowned this afternoon while attempting to go ashore to buy a newspaper. First Mate John Phillips of East Boston and three crew members, who lowered a boat to aid him, were blown ashore and frostbitten.
Mate Philips tells how the schooner Sawyer bound for Cuba with ice from Jonesport was driven by head winds to several ports, capsized dory, Captain Dobbin clinging to the boat bottom, crew rescued him after a desperate attempt to reach shore tonight at Provincie town harbor.
