Train No. 21 known as the Chicago and St. Louis express derailed over an embankment eight miles east of Johnstown Pennsylvania. Early reports cited many deaths, later revised to no fatalities but numerous serious injuries. A relief train with physicians left Johnstown at 12 47 as officials barred reporters. The Pennsylvania special 18 hour train between New York and Chicago wrecked about 33 miles west of Altoona, near a telegraph office, with four Pullman sleepers aboard.
