President Cornelius P. Shea of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and his co defendants were found not guilty by a Chicago jury after a four hour deliberation in the Criminal Court. The acquittal ends a two year old conspiracy case tied to the strike against department stores.
The second trial began February 1 and contrasts with the first, which lasted 181 days. State witnesses included Albert Young, president of the rival teamsters organization, and two other original defendants who turned state's evidence early in the former trial.
Mrs Cornelius P Shea wife of the labor leader was notified by a Postman that her husband had been acquitted in Chicago yesterday. She said she was very pleased and thanked the Post for the kindness in notifying her and that she had confidence he would be acquitted.
Four pulp laden cars rolled from a spur track near Cascade Mills between Gorham and Berlin, New Hampshire, slid down a mountain grade, and rammed a helping engine. Engineer J. R. McDaniels was killed instantly as the locomotive and cars wrecked at 9:20 p.m.
In New York on February 21 the coroner discharged Lottie Wallau who faced a charge of killing her mother by poison. She was rearrested for murder and arraigned. bail set at 60000 with hearing date fixed for February 28. Jurors split four to eight on whether death was caused by poisoning or natural causes.
A public hearing at Kingsley Hall in Boston showcased strong citizen demand for reduced telephone rates and improved service from New England Telephone & Telegraph. Attorney Edward A. Whitman pressed for full company books and court summons to compel testimony from General Thomas Sherwin and other officers. Hearing adjourned to March 1 as supporters urged witnesses and detailed inquiries.
Boston observers expect a full slate of patriotic religious social and sporting events across Greater Boston today and into tomorrow. Governor Guild will host a Memorial Hall reception as a highlight while State and local patriotic groups open houses and DAR receptions proliferate. Military events include the United Spanish War Veterans encampment at Ford Hall and Knights of Columbus services at St. Margaret's Dorchester and St. Vincent's South Boston. The Old South Church Old South Meeting House Barnard Memorial and mass regimental reunions add to the day with sports and dances also on offer.
London Feb 21 The Rotterdam mail steamer Berlin from Harwich to Hook of Holland wrecked in a gale while entering port. With one survivor all 143 aboard are believed lost in the worst cross channel disaster in years.
Flora McDonald, wife of Michael C. McDonald, shot and killed Webster N. Guerin owner of the Harrison Art Company at LaSalle and Van Buren. Authorities say Guerin had attempted to extort money by threats of disclosure. Mrs McDonald was arrested and later identified by her husband who recalled past harassment by Guerin.
New York February 21 John D Rockefeller’s fortune was clarified in an inquiry. Frederick T Gates said Rockefeller’s fortune cannot exceed 250 to 300 million and his annual income in any year never above 15 to 20 million. He owns about 20 percent of Standard Oil stock.
Captain James Sistare of Noank reported finding wreckage pieces off Watch Hill that are from the steamer Larchmont sunk in a collision with the schooner Harry Knowlton on February 11. He buoyed the spot where the collision occurred. Lighthouse Tender Cactus was en route to locate the sunken steamer.
Reports from Hook of Holland and Harwich detail the Berlin disaster with messages noting a north pier stranding, dangerous conditions, failed rescue attempts, and a total loss with all crew and passengers presumed dead. Cause unknown though engine or steering issues are suspected. Evelyn Thaw in sorrow.
Evelyn Nesbit Thaw sobbed on the witness stand under District Attorney Jerome as she confessed to continued relations with Stanford White after their first affair. She described travels and shared expenses with Thaw, revealed letters and credits, and said she hoped to save Thaw from the electric chair.
