Westboro reports Rev. Dr. Everett D. Burr, longtime Boston pastor, killed Saturday night in a westbound express wrecking him. Body found frozen near Sumner Street Bridge. identity confirmed by his notebook. His gold watch and about $100 were not recovered.
The body shows severe injuries from a train dragging it 409 feet before it left the rails and the ditch. Medical Examiner Knight calls the death an accident, likely from a fall during an illness episode. Rev H S Schue identified the deceased and will notify the family. an inquest will be held.
Dr Everett D Burr, a leading Massachusetts Baptist pastor, dies after an illness and sudden disappearance. He had planned relief work in New York and left home without informing family, prompting a search amid fears for his safety. He leaves a wife and three children Dorothy Frances and Carlton. He served 12 years at Ruggles Street Baptist Church before moving to Newton Centre.
A man’s body was found beside an inbound rail thirteen hours after he was believed to fall from a outbound train. The missing gold watch and $100 raise questions about how the body crossed double tracks and why it wasn’t found sooner in a populous area. If the fall occurred at 4 45 p m daylight would have exposed the body for over an hour.
Dr Burr traveled extensively during the winter and fall to speak at relief and charity meetings across the Eastern United States. A Yale alumnus, he then studied at Brown University and Crozer Theological Seminary, serving his first pastorate in Chicago before moving to Boston. Born Nyack on the Hudson in January 1861, he died at age 45 after a notable clerical career.
Amherst February 24. Miss Helen A Linehan a Cambridge public school teacher was instantly killed when an Amherst and Sunderland line trolley derailed near Amherst while returning from Holyoke. Only one passenger survived. the conductor and motorman were unhurt. Linehan had visited Amherst to see her parents after teaching here previously.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for snow Monday followed by clearing and slight warming. In New England the moisture hits Monday with clearing in the south in the afternoon, then fair Tuesday with fresh southwest winds.
Boston & Maine Railway plans a substantial wage hike for about 1000 conductors and 1800 brakemen within four days. The plan calls for a $1 weekly raise for drivers and wharfmen, effective April 1. Current pay ranges from $12 to $14 with 10 in 11 hours and Saturday half holidays year round.
The Philadelphia express on the Pennsylvania Railroad derailed after entering an open switch at Sixteenth Street yards. One coach telescoped and two others derailed while an arriving New York train narrowly avoided a collision. Ambulances were summoned but officials said no injuries occurred.
Police search for 11 year old George Ross son of William T. Ross of Citizens Ice Company who vanished after leaving Music Hall with a sailor type man. Report says investigators fear he may be aboard a harbor ship or island held for ransom by river pirates. The last sighting was about 10 PM Wednesday night.
