After a 42303 mile voyage the great battleship fleet arrives at Hampton Roads. President Roosevelt will lead a stately procession as the fleet enters the Roads, hailed by crowds and flags, marking a proud moment for the nation.
The Rev A Z Conrad led a massive revival campaign ending in Boston with record crowds. Ministers aided in the event drawing thousands to Christianity as almost 800,000 attended the series. By 5 pm the crowd outside swelled, and thousands were turned away from the final event at Mechanics Hall.
Mrs. Cushing Kimball and three maids were trapped in their rooms during a blaze at 271 Beacon Street last night. They were rescued with Mrs. Kimball carried down a ladder from the second floor while the maids escaped over the roof to adjacent houses. The fire, started by an overheated furnace in the basement, breached walls and filled the house with smoke.
Yesterday fires hit Wakefield Congregational Church and Canton barn of Blue Hill Street Railway Co. causing 125000 and 150000 dollars in losses. East Douglas Thayer Hall and adjacent buildings burned for 30000 dollars while St Johns Episcopal Church on Tremont Street suffered minor damage.
Destructive blazes across Wakefield Canton East Douglas and Boston caused substantial losses. Wakefield Cong church burned injuring firemen with damages around 125000. Canton Blue Hill street railway car barn and about twenty cars destroyed valued at 150000. East Douglas Thayer Wall and adjacent structures burned. Boston reports a small church fire near panic at St John’s Episcopal.
In Ware Massachusetts Clara Lamarche, 13, woke from seven days of unconscious sleep. Her mother gave medicine as Clara asked for water and the comic section of a paper. Doctor H C Gaffney ordered bed rest as she remained weak.
A fire alarm and quick response saved residents when smoke trapped maids on the top floor. Mrs Kimball and her two sons notified fire headquarters. Deputy Chief Grady and Ladder 15 evacuated them. Hoseman Murray rescued top-floor maids from the roof. Property damage reached about 7000 dollars with several valuable oil paintings destroyed.
A switching engine side-swiped the local passenger train on the Boston and Maine Connecticut River division between Greenfield and Springfield. One hundred people were endangered. John Saunders of Westhampton was injured. Investigators believe a misplaced switch caused the crash.
The Panther led a battered fleet into Old Point Comfort after a Friday night hurricane forced reduced speeds on Saturday. The storm, called a hurricane by sailors, affected 16 battleships as they trailed the Panther by about 100 miles. The returning battleship fleet is near the Southern drill grounds off the Virginia capes, with Connecticut in steady wireless contact.
Harvard and Dartmouth ice hockey teams clash tonight for the intercollegiate title as crowds anticipate a tight contest. Crowley and Fowler race Saturday to try to lower the 145 mile record. Stewart Douglas Robinson a Harvard junior and nephew of President Roosevelt was found dead after a fall from the sixth story of Hampden Hall dormitory in Cambridge. Police and officers located the body near the sidewalk at Massachusetts avenue and Plympton street. several teammates and club members were present at the scene.
An officer summons Sergeant Keaney and Daniel Shea of the Cambridge fire department. Shea reacts to the call by crossing the street and noticing an open window with a light burning high in the building, half hidden by a coping.
S W V conventions in Springfield with Department Commander Colonel Edward J. Gihon presiding. Nominations include Richard R. Flynn for department commander and Henry J. McCammon and Henry A.
