A mayor calls banks and businesses to close as U S troops assist police to guard the president. School children mass in streets, banners and flags decorate buildings, and a large welcoming demonstration unfolds amid tight security. Continued on page 20 fourth column.
Police believe the automobile bandit who killed Patrolman Charles F. Deininger in a Chelsea garage may be in or near Boston. Marion O'Brien alias Curry and the man aiding him have been traced by a police dragnet with a likely capture within the next 24 hours.
Leaders signed only because convinced Allies ready to occupy the country if needed. Assembly fell into intense silence as Erzberger described Foch's stern demands before the Commission.
The House Ways and Means Committee agreed to fix loan terms by legislation rather than grant Secretary Glass wide discretion. Short term notes maturing in one to five years would be offered in the forthcoming Victory Liberty Loan campaign in place of long term bonds.

Delegates include William J. Hutcheson John H. Donlin William Bowen Polar G. Cook and Milton Snelling.
The Italian delegation to the peace conference informed the secretary that it cannot accept arbitration by President Wilson for Italian and Jugo-Slav claims in Dalmatia. They say all territorial claims should be decided by the peace conference and reject exceptional procedures.

A gunman demanded entry at a Somerville store to steal cash after entering with a dark green coat. The clerk locked in the cellar, gun drawn, as the assailant threatened violence and fled with money. a bystander was shot in the arm and later treated at Somerville Hospital. A suspect was arrested in Charlestown but released after the clerk identified the real culprit.
In a dramatic New England raid, 14 Department of Justice agents boarded the steamship Ker shaw at Northern avenue dock just before sailing to Norfolk and confiscated enough whiskey to stock a liquor store. The wet goods were seized after a thorough crew quarters search.

Officers of the Boston Street Carmen's Union will demand a conference with the trustees of the Boston Elevated Street Railway Company this morning. They act in response to Chairman James F. Jackson's alleged intimation that the trustees are prepared for a struggle with the carmen's union over wages to reduce fares.
Indignation runs high after a statement attributed to Mr. Jackson and forum remarks on one man cars. President Higgins and Business Agent Timmins demand an immediate trustees conference to confirm or deny the remarks and threaten wage action when the May 1 contract expires. They oppose any wage reduction and plan to seek higher pay citing living costs and the National War Labor Board award.
The American steamer Narragansett, refloated from rocks off the Isle of Wight after running aground on Feb 1, is not seriously damaged. It is hoped she will be refitted and ready for service in two months.
