No Change In Market As Season Closes Abruptly

There is little change this week as business drags along. Orders arrive by mail for small lots, but there is no pressing demand typical of season end. Manufacturers have given up late demand expectations, and a sharp close seems likely. Boots and shoes begin activity on samples, while general stores seek ready cash purchases of odds and ends. New England firms increasingly target retail trade to cut middlemen. Boots and shoes shipments outside New England total 47,152 cases this week, down from 53,787 last year, with year to date at 290,771 cases versus 327,771 in 1884, a drop of 36,950.
