The port collector resigns to make way for the appointment of Hon. G H Lyman as successor. Lyman steps into the post amid ongoing port operations and duties.
Augustus Hodgman, 66, treasurer of the First Universalist Parish, collapsed and died in the church vestry after arriving for an adjourned meeting. Medical Examiner says heart disease. He leaves a son Arthur and a daughter. born in New Hampshire and formerly a Boston lawyer's collector.
Elmer Chevalt age 15 and Jeff Colslins age 12 were nabbed by a Fitchburg rail yard officer and locked up at Station 15. The pair, runaways from Dover New Hampshire, had walked and stolen rides to Boston and were attempting to board a freight train. Parents were notified and plan to reclaim them today.
The Boston Elevated Railway Company held a meeting with engineer J A J Waddell of Kansas City who designed the Chicago North Western elevated system. Despite some differing opinions on minor points, the group agrees on the general structure and, with prior studies by Kimball and Worcester, will refine plans to submit to railroad commissioners.
despatch from Captain Irving of islander arriving at Union from Skaguay says the Clara Nevada of Seattle was wrecked and it is believed all aboard perished. He notes terrific weather up north and gives no passenger count or voyage direction. The vessel was formerly the Hassler of the revenue service.
A party of sixty five men, mostly mechanics, formed the Alaska Klondike Company expedition and gears up to leave for the Klondike via Philadelphia, Chicago, and Tacoma. They will travel to Fort Wrangel by steamer, then push 260 miles up the Stickeen River and 800 miles overland to Lake Teslin. Outfit carried on Tacoma sleds. horses sold or kept upon arrival.
The Klondike steamer Oregon, bound for Dyea and Skaguay, returned to Astoria with coal bunkers on fire. Officials report the fire is under control and the vessel is safely moored.
William H. Stickney, the oldest member of the Illinois bar, twice a state legislator, and a prominent early lawyer editor and politician, died in Chicago. He was aged in Baltimore in November and moved to Illinois in 1834.
Miss Charlotte Agusta Andrews of Ireland died last evening at the home of Walter Andrews in Heath Hill Brookline where she was staying. She was the daughter of Louis Willoughby Andrews and Alice Augusta Willock of England. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at St Pauls Episcopal Church.
George Plummer Smith a well known Philadelphia resident died today at age 83 The former wholesale dry goods dealer retired from business shortly before the Civil War era obit notes his age and long local ties
Madrid reports the cabinet discussed Cuba war status and De Lome matter. De Lome resigns as ambassador in Washington and Louis Polo Bernabe is named his successor. Cortes election set for March 20 with a decree to convene chambers. Bernabe, son of Vice-Admiral Polo, previously works in the foreign ministry.
In the Senate on February 14 the Cuban issue split two ways. An Allen Neb amendment to the diplomatic and consular appropriation bill recognizing Cuban insurgent belligerency was reported adversely by the foreign relations committee. Senator Morgan moved a resolution asking the President to provide information on Cuba including recognition of the autonomous government and any agent discussing reciprocity. The resolution passed requesting reports since March 4, 1897 and whether any Cuban government agent has been accredited or recognized by the United States for negotiations or treaties.
Boston residents gathered in Faneuil Hall to oppose the Lodge immigration bill. The rally featured speeches by notable city figures and ended with resolutions protesting immigration restrictions and affirming universal rights and American tradition.
Washington officials keep mum on Woodford cipher cable contents as Spain faces possible disavowal. Some expect a formal statement from Senor Dullen while Duke de Arcos might be named minister to speed a cordial adjustment. Dupuy De Lome plans to depart Washington soon.
The funeral for Thomas Norton, longtime Roxbury resident, was conducted at St Patrick's Church Dudley Street with Revs Regan Walsh and Gallagher presiding. Ushers included George Quinn Eugene Donnelly John Ford Edward Wally Charles Smith and Senator Charles I Quirk. Patrons listed by name attended.
An electric car on the Lynn & Boston line struck a moving Boston & Albany freight train at Everett avenue about 12:30. Seven women and about a dozen passengers escaped injury. the motorman and gate tender faced criticism as the car shattered gates and forced through an apparently slipping crossing. Frank Claffey and Chelsea suffered head injuries, with Chelsea taken to Frost Hospital. Conductor Philip Reynolds was cut. he remained at his post amid the crash.
Washington February 14 The Hawaiian annexation treaty was taken up in executive session. Senator Pettigrew argued the McKinley tariff spurred revolution to gain sugar bounty. Senator Proctor praised annexation for military protection while warning against English or Japanese moves. Senator White pressed for a vote timetable. Senator Davis said timing unclear.
Car 132 of the Boston street railroad struck Cronan's Malden express van on Malden bridge opposite the pumping station. The van driver was thrown into the street but escaped serious injuries. Inward cars were delayed about three quarters of an hour.
Washington Feb 14 The Lew resolution from Representative Lew of Washington calling for Minister De Lome's recall was introduced in the House amid talk of Cuba action. The measure asks for information on the Cuban concentrados and Spain's pursuit of Cuban autonomy and was reported by the foreign affairs committee. It was adopted unanimously with no division.
