Andrew Cooper and Walter Hill, both of Everett, were overcome by gas while repairing a manhole on Broadway near Malden Street in Revere last night. They were rescued near death by a street car motor man, conductor, and passengers.
Mayor Scanlon and the City Council plan to meet Governor Foss at the State House to discuss the Lawrence strike after a conference with Adjutant General Pearson and Colonel Sweetser. Officials reportedly urged withdrawal of militia, but the adjutant-general refused, pledging to keep troops until a settlement ends the threat of further unrest. The strikers appeared peaceful, and city leaders reportedly favor ending martial law.
Mystery surrounds the sudden illness of Madame Lillian Nordica who collapsed at the Hotel Fenox after a rehearsal of two acts of Tristan and Isolde. Doctors offered no firm cause but neuritis affecting both arms was widely reported while paralysis or stroke was ruled out.
A. W. Shaw of Freeport, founder of the A W Shaw Corporation, disappeared amid losses estimated at 50 000 to 75 000. In a letter to partner J W Amick he threatened to end it all and said he would be on or in the ocean. Receivers J W Amick and Edward Wheeler will oversee the business to protect creditors.

Motorman William Cowhay and Conductor William Watts near the hole were overcome by deadly gas while saving unconscious workers Cooper and Hill. Hill stayed at the edge until collapse, Cooper was moved to safety by Watts, and both victims were rushed to the hospital after two hours of medical care. Police and Dr Eastman attended the scene as gas from nearby lines was investigated.

New York February 12 Foulke Brandt transferred from Clinton prison to Sing Sing to be brought to New York for court actions. Attorney General Carmody argues courts lack power and the Governor must reopen the case. Brandt serving five years of a ninety year sentence for burglary in the first degree. If habeas corpus frees him, DA will retry to reexamine the case. Three Albany bills seek relief for such situations.
The Cudahy Packing Company faces a 132500 fine in a U S court indictment over daily sales of oleomargarine in Atlanta. The government says about 60 pounds a day were sold to Thomas Hopkins at 7 cents a pound, while books were falsified to show distribution across several restaurants. Indicted restaurant owners denied using oleomargarine and testified.
Miss Emma F. Sterling, leaving Franklin Square House on East Newton street about 10 oclock, was pushed against a fence and had her purse torn from her hand by a man who then fled. She lives at 223 West Springfield street and could not cry out until the thief had escaped.
At the banquet the President received telegrams confirming two Republican delegates from Virginia's eighth district and two from Alaska pledged to support him were elected that day. A telegram also said Colorado's Republican State central committee voted for him by 106 to 110. Prominent party leaders attended, including Chauncey Depew, Will Barnes Jr, Timothy Koenig, Henry Taft, and former mayoral candidate Otto Barnard as toastmaster.
Edgartown faces a coal shortage as harbor ice three feet thick blocks ships. The coal laden schooner Hannock is aground and at risk of breaking up. crews fear abandonment as ice gnaws the hull. The Senate pensions committee rejected the Sherwood dollar a day pension bill. A Smoot substitute proposing $24,000,000 annually was adopted. Senators Brown and Curtis said they would press the Sherwood bill in the Senate as a substitute. Smoot estimates the cost at $24,000,000 based on pension bureau data. The Sherwood bill would cost about $76,000,000 per year.

Mme Nordica became ill after rehearsals and was unable to perform as scheduled in Boston. She had arrived with a nurse and was seen by doctors in New York and Boston. Dr Kimball and others said no shock symptoms were evident though uncertainty remained about her condition.

He was arrested after calmly waiting for police and was committed to a mental examination at the Washington Asylum Hospital. he is a native of Ireland with prior asylum confinement in Albany.
A telegram informed vice consul James M. d Almeida of the death of Barao do Rio Branco minister of foreign affairs of Brazil. In mourning the Brazilian flag will fly at half mast for three days.
