South Hadley reports Frank E. Moos former town tax collector arrested for larceny of 4508. Irregularities found in his accounts dated back to 1907 1909 with selectmen uncovering shortages earlier. Moos had secured six prominent townsmen to endorse a 4000 note he negotiated and repaid.
Moos sudden resignation sparked town talk though his financial trouble only became public tonight with his arrest. He was esteemed as a longtime official and his brother sits on the Board of Selectmen. Formerly a paper company bookkeeper, he has spent five years in the printing business and was thought to be prospering.
The German steamship Varzin with 43 crew and cargo worth over two million dollars, broken propeller shaft, and battered by massive seas, drifted nearly 500 days from Sydney before Erika towed her to Boston harbor. Emergency sails failed. distress signals ignored. voyage from Dec 11 to Jan 29 ended in harbor.
Mayor Fitzgerald filed with the city clerk a campaign expense report detailing his part in a fierce Boston mayoralty contest. The filing notes a total cost of $10,500 for his campaign. Other candidates listed include STOPPOW, Hibbard, Trainor, with various expenses and receipts attached.

Washington February 8 The National Geographic Society resolved to fund an expedition to search for the South Pole similar to Peary's North Pole achievements Pending sufficient funds the plan proceeds Commander Peary has been notified of the board’s action by the Society executives.
Captain Bartlett who commanded the steamer Roosevelt on the North Pole voyage is likely to lead the Antarctic expedition. The Roosevelt with sledges and equipment is ready to be stored with provisions for the search of the globe’s last unachieved goal. Final funding decisions will follow Geographic Society consultations to gauge financial support.

Miss Emma Hoffmann, 21, prima donna of the Boston Opera Company, sues Samuel Kraut, importer of 5 Warren Street New York, for breach of promise seeking $100,000. Attorney Henry L. Franklin of 320 Broadway says Kraut spent over $15,000 on Hoffmann’s European musical education in four years and attended her Boston debut performance last December.
Mr. Kraut reportedly promised no marriage. He met Miss Hoffmann in Chicago four years ago after she heard Caruso praise her voice. Aiding her music career, Kraut sent Hoffmann and her family abroad, covering travel and training expenses for herself and her parents.
Emma Hoffmann, Boston opera singer, files breach of promise suit against businessman Mr. Kraut for 100000. Case cites alleged European premiere plans and promised marriage in 1909, plus letters from Italy requesting remittances to cover expenses. Kraut’s attorney says Hoffmann knew Kraut’s wife was involved in her career. he allegedly hosted a Boston debut with a party to aid her performance.

A Brighton cattle abattoir burned early this morning, with flames threatening several acres. The loss reached about 400000 as fires struck at 1 40, 1 50 and 2 35. Workers and volunteers freed stock while the Boston & Albany line was used to move screaming cattle and hogs from the site. hundreds of cattle sheep and hogs were on hand for market today.
A four story frame building at the New England Rendering Company burned rapidly, walls collapsed within 30 minutes, and the plant was leveled. The 80 by 90 foot structure sat in a 20 acre abattoir hollow, with grease fuels and a quick spread to surrounding cattle sheds and machines. Fire alarms escalated to a third rung, sparks reached neighboring Armour and Brighton Company buildings, and 50,000 pounds of beef and ham were within the burning cattle shed. Firefighters saved the adjacent tenement district as stock was driven to yards and cattle removed from sheds. The conflagration drew crowds from Boston, lighting the sky for miles.
Firefighters saved much of the burning building while 200000 pounds of dressed hogs and numerous calves fled into the streets. The Bowker Fertilizer plant was quickly doused. By 3 PM flames were under control with losses estimated at 400000 dollars. James Walker and Ben Magee discovered the blaze as nearby firms such as Brighton Dressed Beef Company and others suffered heavy losses.
The Brighton abattoir covers about four acres between Market Street and the Fitchburg line of the Boston and Maine railroad. It comprises brick and wooden buildings capable of handling thousands of cattle and hogs, with a nearby tenement district and Charl River running alongside. Slaughterers S. S. Learned Company and J. A. Hataway Company operate there, once tied to the Swifts, then the Armours. It is cited as the largest abattoir in the state and among the largest in the East.
