Insurgent gains reported as Spanish forces assault Philippine lines

Madrid reports Major General Rios says insurgents captured nearly the entire exterior American line. American resistance at exterior barriers included artillery and shipfire. Warships burned Caloocan Pacom and nearby towns. Both sides suffered. a sergeant wounded by a stray bullet. Public sympathy leans to Aguinaldo, though fears rise over consequences and Spanish prisoners.

Otis reports fresh attacks near Manila and repulse

General Otis dispatches state insurgents attacked outer lines at 845 PM and repeatedly through the night. By daybreak the line advanced, driving insurgents beyond former positions and capturing villages and defenses. Casualties for U S forces around 175 with few dead. Navy supported flank attacks and Manila remained quiet.

A telegram to General Creely from Manila dated February 5 reports action continuing since early morning with heavy losses but overall favorable progress for U S forces. Colonel Thompson leads the signal corps on General Creely's staff.
