A February Berlin fire raged through the Green block killing a two-story bank and other buildings. With a crippled steamer and overwhelmed by wind, the fire spread toward Postoffice square as residents evacuated and outlying fire departments rushed aid.
A Boston Post despatch from Marconi wireless notes the first sea disaster news sent by wireless. The message traveled over 200 miles to the Wellfleet Marconi station, underscoring wireless telegraphy advances.
On the Cymric the rescuers face a gale and snow as the burning St Cuthbert sinks. 37 men officers and crew are saved while 12 crewmen and six stowaways perish. Capt Finch weighs the risk but awaits the rescue operation amid mountain waves and a blizzard.
Philip Carney aged 70 of Highland avenue Somerville fell on Washington street yesterday suffering a fractured left shoulder.
