Special to The Post reports February 3 on the defeat of Hewitt’s motion to recommit Bland’s resolution of inquiry. The outcome, described as not a fair test of silver influence, saw Republicans vote with Bland to irritate the administration while both parties sought to avoid addressing the main question during final passage. the vote produced no count.
In Washington on February 3, the Senate tabled the Riddleberger and Pugh resolutions on motion by Mr. Edmunds and agreed to study a judiciary committee substitute. Debate will occur after Edmunds reports the substitute. The Dakota bill then dominated the agenda with Logan arguing admission benefits and electoral implications.

Curiaco Feb 3 report from Huron Dak says Commissioner Sparks of the general land office found that Indian title to about 10,000,000 acres in North Dakota has not been extinguished. Lands opened to settlement by Secretary Yeller’s 1884 order have about 2000 settlers. The surveyor general of Dakota is ordered to suspend all surveys in this section, affecting nearly half the year's survey land.
New York reports at 6:20 PM a tugboat named Blanche Kate towing a railroad float up the North River struck a rowboat from the Austrian corvette Donan off West Twenty sixth street. The rowboat carried eleven men led by Midshipman Karsch. eleven missing. River police detained Captain Hupert of the Blanche Kate.
The American Bell Telephone Company sues the National Improved Telephone Company in U S Circuit Court New Orleans before Judges Pardee and Billings. Defense seeks indefinite continuation arguing DOJ equity action. Plaintiffs seek protection of Bell patents and exclusive rights to manufacture electric speaking telephones.
Fort Wayne Indiana January 3 Last night C M Keck express agent at Auburn Junction and J B Barrett telegraph operator long known in society were arrested on charges of robbing several thousand dollars worth of valuables. They opened trunks with false keys and relocked them after taking valuables.
New Years Feb 3. The Nineteenth Century Club heard Charles W Eliot president of Harvard and Rev Dr McCosh president of Princeton discuss the place religion should have in a college. Eliot said an unsectarian college is most useful but not the only useful kind in a country with no established church or dominant sect.
The Senate conference committee on differences was in session all day and adjourned without a report by 1 p m. They stated this evening that an agreement has been reached and a report will be sent to the caucuses tomorrow morning.
Olympia, February 3. The state upper house voted 7 to 5 against a bill to create a railroad commission, a measure previously approved by the lower house 16 to 5. The defeat preserves the property rights of the Oregon Railway and Navigation and the Northern Pacific for two more years.
Special to The Post reports a string of burglaries in East Weymouth Mass. A home on Lake Street owned by Thomas Cullen was broken into with $20 taken. Totman’s periodical store lost about $10 in change after a rear glass pane was broken. An attempted entry at Joan Lee’s High Street grocery left thieves fleeing before entry.
A service will be held next Sunday evening at the Young Men's Christian Union in memory of Henry P Kidder longtime trustee and fund chairman. Rev Edward HK Hale Samuel Wells Sir H H Sprague W H Baldwin and others will participate.
Alfred Reed a Narragansett Hotel Providence clerk was badly injured in a tobogganing accident at a Worcester slide when he moved against a tree. Police and rescue services assisted at the scene. No further details on his condition or hospitalization were provided.
Rev Aaron Porter long associated with the Unitarian Church in Salem Massachusetts was installed and ordained as pastor of the First Congregational Church in Gratton Vermont. Miss Susan Chaffee Stearns daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Stearns of Somerville united in marriage to Mr. John Morrison of Medford last evening. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Edward Everett Hale at the South Congregational Church with ushers F. P. Stearns Edwin Stearns N. Boynton C. H. Whitney A. T. Waite and Arthur Wellington assisting.
The funeral will be held from his residence at Asylum station at 12:30 PM and the body will be buried in the cemetery until spring when it will go to New Hampshire for burial. In respect, Boston public schools will be closed today.
