Cambridge Girls Return From New York Wish To Stay

Esther McElwain seventeen and Rebecca Alken fifteen left Cambridge with dreams of film stardom. After visiting Manhattan agencies without success they were summoned back by their mothers. A New York judge ordered both girls returned to Cambridge where they arrived by train under guardianship.

New Strike Vote To Be Taken By Railroad Brotherhoods

Wadlin to resign as Boston Public Library librarian

Horace Greeley Wadlin, librarian since 1902 and age 65, has resigned his post with the Boston Public Library. Trustees accepted his resignation and he plans rest and occasional writing, effective July, though he requested January 31, 1917, per his letter to the president.

Carrigan to Decide Return to Red Sox Next Tuesday

City Banquet Shells Out Beer Sparks Publicity

A Waltham no license city banquet ends with Mayor Eben J Williams and Rev Francis Web ster departing after beer is served at the Crescent Hotel. Aldermen and 42 guests stay, drinking beer and tonic amid controversy over beer at the annual dinner. Alderman George Thornburg notes the event has beer at many banquets and claims 44 guests consumed 48 bottles without intoxication.

Fire Drives Residents From Dorchester Ave House

Nineteen small children in nightgowns were carried to safety as a basement fire at a three story building 1404 to 1410 Dorchester avenue Field's Corner threatened total loss. The street floor houses John J Hagerty Co liquor dealers. Second floor residents included Adolph Locke and seven children. Third floor housed two families, Jacob Feinberg with seven children and John Barnes with five children.

Fire destroys liquor store in blaze fueled by overheated stove

Three boys saw the basement ablaze and sounded the alarm as a four month old baby awoke its father. Sergeant Edgar Parker and patrolmen rescued seven children from the burning building above ground. Neighbors aided victims. damage to the building and stock pegged at about $2500.

David Janowski defeated Jackson W. Showalter 11th and final game in Lexington to claim the $1000 purse. Showalter, former American champion, represented Georgetown, Kentucky, while Janowski held the French championship title.

Rail chiefs threaten action over Adamson act benefits

Four chiefs signed a cryptic statement alleging railroad attitude could wipe out benefits from the Adamson act and saying the situation will be presented to the membership. They refused to confirm if this signals another strike vote like the eight hour day campaign.

Conductor Patrick J Barrett Dies After Fateful Melrose Incident

Patrick J Barrett 57 of Ash Street Reading a Boston and Maine conductor collapsed on a fast train outside Malden. He died at Melrose Hospital from heart trouble after being removed from the train. Barrett joined B M in 1879 was promoted in 1890 and had run local trains since then. He is survived by his wife.
