Curley announces candidacy at Tammany Club and vows re election. Peace movement faces opposition from churchmen as prominent prelates appeal to the nation. Say premature peace.
Washington leaders from over 50 bishops and laymen warn against a premature peace in Europe. The signers, representing many regions and denominations, include the Episcopal bishop of Massachusetts in a document to the nation urging caution and warning of potential curses.
United States observers note varied opinions on the central powers reply but agree the vital factor is the entente allies and President Wilson. Peace advocates seek an opening to advance negotiations as Greece signals readiness to aid in peace. President sent an appeal to Spain as part of the effort.
Secretary Lansing announced that the entente reply had not been cabled for delivery to Germany and that the State Department had received the official text of the Spanish note refusing to join in a peace movement. He refused to be questioned on the matter. The note surprised Washington officials and was not yet reviewed by President Wilson or Lansing.
The Reverend Herbert S. Johnson of Warren Avenue Baptist challenged Reverend Cortland Myers of Tremont Temple to cover a $100 wager and defer to Reverend A Z. Conrad of Park Street Church to decide which has been the bigger drawback to the Billy Sunday campaign in Boston.
Dr. Myers faces a challenge from Dr. Johnson in a wager over who hinders Billy Sunday’s Boston revival. The bet targets Dr. Conrad of Park Street Church as referee with $100 donations to local causes if judged in error.
