In the abbey grounds of Waverley, Brother Samuel reports misdeeds and feuds with local villagers as Abbot John presides over disputes of rents and escheat. A frightened monk describes a demon horse terrorizing the five-virgate field, soon joined by a dramatic scene of rope-wielding lay foresters attempting to capture the creature.
Nigel Loring refuses to yield to the great yellow horse Pommers as it charges Abbey grounds, escapes by leaping fences, and bounds across Hankley Down. The Abbot, sacrist, and monks watch a dramatic contest of will between rider and beast, ending only as the pursuer drives toward distant Surrey hills.
