Novel Scheme Defrauds Government by Queens County Cattle Dealers
Inspectors of the U S Bureau of Animal Industry uncovered a scheme in Queens County where cattle infected with pleuro-pneumonia were bought for 20 to 25 dollars and later condemned, with carcasses exposed to spread the disease to prompt appraisals and slaughter. Authorities estimate Treasury losses between 1000 and 2000 dollars, as offenders shifted cattle from Newton or Jamaica farms to profit from inflated appraisals. A December 22 order warns owners that destroyed animals with contagious disease will yield no compensation under 1884 laws.

Insanity Board Clash Over Farmed Patients in Sandwich
A letter to the editor details a long dispute with Massachusetts State Lunacy and Charity over five insane women housed by Alice Cooke in Sandwich.
