Lawrence December 27 Spect An reports State Officer Batchelder was arrested in Ipswich as he left jail. Accompanying him, William Dwyer alias Patrick Dorgan is charged with multiple breaks in the area. Dwyer has served several terms in houses of correction and a six year prison term.
The Northampton jury found Charles T. Parsons guilty of false imprisonment of Vincent Zabrienojtis a Russian Pole in his employ. Judge Barker ruled consent and right to liberty govern. assault with deceit or fraud would be required for a crime. The jury deliberated fifty five minutes.
In Curiaco Illinois on December 27, Dr Dows of Lowell and partners sued Elm Wood town Peoria county to recover principal and interest on $40,000 in bonds issued for the Dixon Peoria and Hannibal railroad project. The town issued $75,000 though charter allowed $35,000. a curative act legalized $49,000 more, which the defense now claims the Legislature lacked power to pass, rendering the extra bonds void.
New York dispatch reports three counterfeiters captured in a Brooklyn den tonight while at work on silver dollars. Arrested were William Green 65 of 14 Henry Street Patrick Kenny 45 of 37 Bowery and Timothy Cassidy 40 of 50 Pearl Street Cassidy just released from prison and a full counterfeit outfit was found at the scene.
In Pottstown, Penn, educators from top institutions gathered for the third annual meeting at the University of Pennsylvania hall. Attendees included Hodder and Andrews of Cornell, Seligman and Smith of Columbia, F A Walker of MIT, Edward Berins and Richards Sly, Albion Small, Steele, and Kliss Keys. Privasperstenta, Penn., Dec. 27. The Norwegian bark Alf, Captain Bach, with fourteen crew and 1000 tons of bag sugar, sailed from Demerara Oct 27 for Philadelphia and has not been heard since. Vessels that left after her have arrived, but the Alf is believed lost with $125,000 value. Mershon & Co. report the Annie E Hall out forty days to Moorehead City and given up. The British ship Astracana from Philadelphia to Havre is said to have foundered, with cargo casks washing ashore on the Isle of Wight. The American brig Sarah and Mama, Captain Nash, from Kingston Jamaica to the Delaware Breakwater, has been out sixty days with logwood on board. grave fears for her safety.

The dispute over St. Thomas's Episcopal Church near Lawrence centers on title deeds and ownership. New York December 27 The Free Press claimed Columbia College trustees may offer Edward J. Phelps the presidency upon his return from England. A five member nominating committee discussed candidates including Seth Low George L Rives J Howard van Amringe and Professor Potter. Chairman Morgan Dix noted age favors choosing a younger candidate. Phelps’s name was informally discussed but not formally proposed.
The funeral of Mrs T T Pitman known as Margery Deane was held at Belmont Memorial Chapel Island Cemetery this afternoon. Attendants included Miss Jenkins of the Boston Herald, Judge and Mrs W S Shurtleff, Fred Perry Powers of the Chicago Times, and former pastor Rev D P Leavitt who spoke of her literary success and wide reader affection. Burial followed as rain fell.
