Newburyport police Captain Patrick Creeden died after plunging 40 feet from the Merrimac Street bridge during a chase of the suspect known as Black Fitzsimmons. He died shortly after at Anna Jacques Hospital from a scalp wound, mangled legs, and internal injuries.
The case of Dan O Donovan who assaulted his 80 year old crippled mother on Russell Street was described in court by his sister Hannah Fitzgerald. The judge sentenced four months in the House of Correction for the assault and two for drunkenness as the court heard how the drunk son invaded his mother's room, dragged her from bed, and caused a nervous shock and arm injury.
A dawn raid on 4 o'clock Sunday led by Captain Creeden ended in his death after pursuing the boxer Black Fitzsimmons across a train and bridge. Creeden fell from an 18 inch rail edge to the pavement below, while Fitzsimmons turned himself in at the station and lived to mourn the captain's loss. Creeden, 46, of Newburyport, left a widow, six children, and five siblings.

W J Masters fireman on the freight reports the operator at South Royalton misdirected a telegraphed order, causing a high speed collision with the northbound express on the same track. John Graham messenger injured, engine 969 Montreal express led by Alexander McConnell, freight engine 404 led by Charles Lewis. both crews injured, derailment occurred.
John Gaffney of 3 Elmwood Place collapsed at the liquor saloon at 1117 Tremont Street Roxbury after an epileptic episode while cleaning bottles. He was later found dead by a bartender.

Dr. Horace Chase and Mrs. William Culliton nee Jennie Phillips married in 1889. Mrs. Chase inherited a Phillips estate worth about 1 million dollars.
