Noted Boston Underwriter George O Carpenter Dies

George Oliver Carpenter, senior member of George O Carpenter & Son, died at 687 Boylston Street after four weeks of illness. Funeral at South Congregational Church at 2 PM Monday with Rev. Dr. Edward Everett Hale officiating. Carpenter, a Boston native, built a major paint and oil business and long led in fire insurance. He served as director of banks and as president of the Boston Fire Underwriters' Union in 1876-77. He was 65 Charter Street era resident and longtime Boston business figure.

Boston civic leader long served in charitable and educational groups

He was a longtime member and trustee of the Charitable Mechanic Association, an incorporator of the South End Industrial School, and served on its finance committee. He belonged to the Boston Board of Aldermen in the early 1870s and was a trustee of the Boston Public Library in 1870-71.
