General John Meredith Read Dies in Paris at 86
Paris reports the death of General John Meredith Read, longtime American diplomat born February 21, 1837 in Philadelphia. Read served as adjutant-general of New York, helped fund arm purchases in 1860, and was United States consul-general for France and Algeria 1869 73, later acting consul-general for Germany during the Franco German war. He studied law in Philadelphia and Albany and earned an A M from Brown University in 1866.
