A major seasonal sale cuts prices on nearly all Winter Overcoats Ulsters and Business Suits for Men and Boys. The store cites mild weather and low business mood and aims to clear surplus stock to hire workers for next year. Boston and Providence shops close Dec 26 and reopen Dec 27 at eight. The sale is the largest markdown since 1857.
Macallar Parker and Company lists its Boston address at 400 Washington Street, inviting inquiries and potential clients to the firm.
The steamer Seneca of the New York and Cuba Mail Service Company, damaged by a fire set by an explosion, was sunk in Havana harbor to prevent further loss. The crew and passengers escaped to shore. cargo valued up to 600000, mostly tobacco cigars and hemp. Earlier incidents involved the City of Alexandria and other fires linked to explosives found in freight.
A Christmas feed at Parker's Boston Helping Hand Mission served about 750 hungry men at seven long tables with turkeys pies and coffee. Guests from missions lodgings and halls packed the hall stairs and corridors as waiters struggled to fill plates while amid sacred music and prayers the donors watched.
A Christmas dinner at Faneuil Hall featured a snoring solo that amused the boys. Mr. George W. Walker and Mr. Parker offered advice urging a new leaf for future holidays as 800 pairs of shoes left for the open air.
The Swedish Working People's Society held a children's carnival and ball at Caledonian Hall in Eliot Street. About one hundred children enjoyed Christmas trees, gifts, and a musical show from 3 pm to 6 pm, followed by adult dancing and refreshments with Wiener's Brass Band providing music. Gustaf Olson led floor duties and a reception committee including Jan Jansen and others managed seating and guest flow, while John Sandin and Emil Stelin headed the arrangement group.
The Boston Industrial Home held a Christmas tree and annual dinner in the chapel for mission school children and inmates. The event featured a cantata Santa Claus Missions, readings, solos by Tilly Franks and Fred G. Roberts, and thanks from Mr. and Mrs. T D Roberts.
The Christmas programme at the State Union began with 8 15 chapel services led by Rev Moriarty. An entertainment followed under Thomas Martin with Colonel William Austin and Frank J. Pilling approval at the Palace Theatre. Players included Woodard Martyne Hafford Eckland Martin and Mantell. After the show a turkey dinner was served and men enjoyed an hour of yard freedom. They behaved well as exemplary boys.
Convicts at the South Boston House of Correction celebrated Christmas with Mass at 8 0 clock a city furnished turkey dinner at noon and an afternoon entertainment. They spent an hour in the yard with no visitors allowed, sharing the holiday among themselves.
Five hundred underprivileged children were hosted by the Emmet Literary Association in Waltham on December 25. A turkey dinner was served at 2 pm followed by a minstrel show. Each child received a clothing item and a toy as a final treat.
The Boston District Telegraph Company’s 150 messenger boys were entertained at dinner at the Crawford House yesterday at 8 p.m. Each boy received a dollar for every month of service. Company officers dined in the private room as the boys cheered for various favors.
The large turnout marked Watertown on December 25 as the funeral for Charles J. Galvin, killed on the Boston and Albany railroad tracks at Brighton last Saturday night. Rev T W Coughlin led services at St Patrick's Church, with more than fifty dollars donated for burial at St Patrick's Cemetery in Waverly.
Captain William M. Kennard, retired master, died at his Middles Street home in Portsmouth early today of pneumonia at age 73. He was a lifelong seaman born in the city and educated here. He leaves a widow.
Chauncey H. Andrews, the millionaire railroad operator and coal and iron producer, died today in Youngstown at age seventy. He was associated with the Pittsburgh Lake Erie, Pittsburgh, Cleveland & Toledo, Niles and New Lisbon lines and other railroads.
The Rev. M. F. Flatley of Immaculate Conception marks ten years as pastor with a vespers service gifting him 1500 dollars in gold, plus Christmas offerings, totaling nearly 2600. Three masses were held with new ordination celebrants aiding the high mass. Archdiocesan clergy and bishops join Thursday for the ordination anniversary observance.
Secretary Herbert disclosed two messages from Captain Picking directing no public release. No U S action yet on guarding American ships from insurgent fire while landing cargoes. He pledged protection for American interests equal to foreign vessels and noted the cruiser New York is being prepared for sea with destination undisclosed.
Eastport Maine December 25 The Hon Robert Burns longtime Democratic leader and prominent businessman died at age 81 He was born in New Hampshire in 1811 moved to Eastport in 1840 and lived there until his death He served as surveyor of customs under Pierce and collector under Buchanan removed by Republicans in 1861 Though aged and inactive in recent years his devotion to Democracy persisted to his final days
A bold black robber knocked down Pacific Express Messenger McCullough on the Marshall Texas station platform this morning and robbed him of a pouch containing from 000 to 3000 dollars. A crowd was present but the culprit escaped and his identity remains unknown.
Washington dispatch reports Tuesday forecast for Maine New Hampshire Vermont showers tonight turning to light snow in north with fair afternoon and a cold northwest wind. Massachusetts Rhode Island Connecticut and eastern New York to see generally fair weather with northwest gales and a cold wave.
Timothy Cronin faced Judge Batchelder in Police Court on an assault with intent to kill charge after stabbing George Alfred Turner. A continuance till Jan 2 was granted to assess injuries. Cronin remanded in jail on $1000 bond as Turner's condition worsens and recovery is doubtful.
Burglars entered the clothing store of Nathan Druker on Fore Street and stole bundles valued at about $600. A young man was arrested on suspicion of selling trousers at a pawn shop but claims another man gave them to him and may not be the burglar.
A 22 year old Donahue bartender on Crosby Street in Will is diagnosed with smallpox and removed to the pest house. He lives with his father and has no known exposure. Board of Health takes precautions to prevent spread.
In a crowded Madison Square Garden event on Christmas Day fully 1000 of the 6000 spectators witnessed Waller Aread break the 24 hour record by 84 miles. Martin, Shock and Albert led the press, while Berlo won specials with strong laps and high finishes by Forster, Starbuck, Van Emb’s, and Ashinger in a pulsating endurance display.
The feature event saw Bettner Hess and Price as contenders until Price’s tire burst with three laps left. Berlo won the five mile scratch in 14 minutes 11? seconds, Newhouse second, Bettner third. Prince defeated Howell in a 14:41 five mile, breaking six seconds off the record. Berle Bettner Hess topped a two mile sprint. A ten mile race followed with Price Berle Vietner finishing first to third in 28:04.6.
The Garden track is twenty two feet wide with a steep thirty degree outer edge incline aiding high speed turns. Fourteen white tents at the eastern end house cots and gas stoves for racers’ rest and meals as anxious trainers work to restore circulation amid blisters stiff joints.
The six day championship at Madison Square Garden began at midnight with Peter J. Berlo leading before retiring at about 1:30 am after 30 miles amid questions from the crowd. Bartholomew and Greer followed, both retiring due to fatigue or injury as two records were broken by Van Emburg with a 5 hour 30 minute 100 mile pace. Prizes totaling 3250 were announced for top miles, with additional rewards for milestones and a share of net receipts, and Albert Schock introduced an electric piano organ to boost tempo after midnight.
Marathon-like scores show Hosmer leading with 305.1 miles at 6 pm and Waller surpassing Ashinger’s 21 hour mark by 650 miles before 9 pm. Prince’s 1891 176 mile record is noted as broken. BERLO wins special races with a mile final heat including Berlo Prince and Newhouse.
Patrick O Rourke, age two, is killed when Bernard McLaughlin, 17, fires a self acting revolver held to the boy's face. McLaughlin, claiming the weapon was not loaded, is taken to the police station as investigators view the scene at 17 Allen's Court. The tragedy follows a day spent together with friends.
Alexander Hamilton Jr., about 45, a Stoughton hardware and plumbing businessman, died by suicide at his father's Walnut street home. He had a history of occasional dissipations and returned from a recent "time" before the fatal shot. He left a widow and daughter Mrs Marshall Cummings, and was respected in town.
Everett, Dec. 25. A disturbance erupted today over rum and beer when William Strachan visited Patrick Doherty at 1 Mystic Place between 3 and 4 PM. The confrontation escalated into a serious affair for one party. Continued on Page 6.
