A string of accidents disrupted Boston and nearby communities Saturday night. Police reported multiple collisions and injuries across several neighborhoods, with responders rushing to the scenes and investigating the causes.
A Saturday of mishaps across Boston and suburbs left multiple injured and two dead. Mattie J. Field died after a kerosene lamp accident at 339A Broadway, South Boston, while Patrick Welch fell to his death from a wagon seat in Dock Square. Augustus Hall and Bernard S. Coyle suffered serious head injuries, with Coyle in a dangerous brain concussion. David Barney and David Quash largely burned after a lamp attack, with Quash likely to die. Stephen Sullivan survived severe arm injury near Charlestown depot, and Kate Cardwell was robbed in West Newton. John McKenna, badly injured at Winter Hill, showed signs of recovery, as did William A. Pine who faced possible death after a leg amputation incident in Waltham. William Fry sustained a nonfatal gunshot wound near Cambridge.
City engineers propose using harbor salt water with floating fire boat stations to supply up to 13 000 gallons per minute. The plan aims to cover the business district within 400 feet of main pipes, enabling rapid water from both land engines and two fire boats. Cost projected at 50 000 dollars, with test line of 10 000 dollars to prove feasibility.
The Rev J Graham Brooks of Brockton spoke at Equity Hall on Charity Under Socialism. He outlined six French revolutionary charity principles including secularization, labor rights, fair work tests, and local control. Patrick McCarthy attempted death by own action by cutting his throat with a pocket knife at his home 60 Howard Street Charlestown in a drunken noonday episode. A slight wound was dressed at Station 15 by Dr Duff and McCarthy was later locked up for drunkenness.
Miss Helen Gould, daughter of the late multimillionaire, will host about a score of New York street youths from Five Points during Christmas at Lyndhurst and Woody Crest near Tarrytown. The children will enjoy a tree, presents, and festive activities arranged by Gould with Rev. Dr. Van De Water and Mrs. Whitney coordinating.
The Emmet Literary Association will serve dinner for 500 poor children at the Park Theatre tomorrow afternoon with a minstrel show and gifts funded by local donations. The First Methodist Society raises food items at Asbury Temple for a charitable sale and distribution to the needy Tuesday.

French, piano maker of 8 Fifth Avenue, was robbed at 10:30 PM after being placed in a hansom by a stranger. $300, a catseye diamond scarfpin, and a vest-pocket stash vanished, while French recovered only groggy details after police and a squad car chase through busy streets. French resides at 9 Clinton Avenue, Brooklyn.
Kingston New York December twenty fourth a teacher Miss Ida V Roornbach dies from injuries after rescuing her father John C Roornbach aged seventy five from a burning homestead. The pair suffered severe burns and the house and contents burned. Roornbach’s daughter was burned while shielding him. she was a cousin of Assemblyman Hoystadt of Ancram. In New Brunswick New Jersey a Santa Claus fire tragedy features Miss Alice Kennedy burned saving her father James J Kennedy at a Christmas tree event. she suffered extensive burns to shoulders and hands while attempting to smother flames on his costume.
Liquor officer John J. Green and Patrolman Mullen confronted eight to ten men in Mrs. Frank Mahan’s kitchen barroom. Decker attacked Green with a tea kettle and teeth, Green was wounded, Mullen cut by broken glass. Decker jailed for resisting and assault. Mrs. Mahan’s husband serves six months for unlicensed liquor sale.
Captain James Bowie sells the 63 ton Sunshine to Huft of New York for blue fishing. The Sunshine, built in Essex in 1806, is a veteran of shore fisheries. Fishermen at T Wharf recall the Clara Cameron loss and Captain West’s brave stand. The City of Malden repairs at the dock. Hesperus slated for dry dock. J L Crandall travels to Victoria to supervise a 2000 ton marine railway. Atlantic Works issues a 184 calendar.
The funeral of Mrs. Mary F. Taff widow of Thomas Taff was held yesterday afternoon from 48 Monument square. The body lay in a black casket before Mass at St. Mary's Church on Warren street with simple Catholic rites. Burial followed at Mt Calvary where Rev James Supple presided. Floral tributes arrived from friends. Charles M. Dacy organized the arrangements with pallbearers Richard Powers Patrick Coyle Benjamin O'Neil and Patrick Burke assist.
