Mrs A J Pollock, 30, a brunette, was assaulted by an unknown man on her Seaspepeed 81L mw street doorstep. She suffered shock and injuries as her husband pursued the attacker. the assailant remains at large. Residents claim insufficient police protection after dark.
Local forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for Monday mainly cloudy with possible light rain, warmer, brisk to light southeast winds. Tuesday should be generally fair with moderate temperatures and southwest winds. The national forecast notes a low energy system over Lake Superior with little precipitation elsewhere, rain or snow likely in northern New England Monday, and brisk southerly winds on the coast.
After four days of pounding the ice jam on the Kennebec River below Bath Maine tugs broke through this afternoon freeing the Seguin and clearing a channel for the fleet of colliers and lumber schooners. The Bismarck and Woodbury aided the effort with damaged gear and exhausted crews. An attempt to free Gardiner schooners is planned tomorrow.

Carrie R. Johnson aged 45 of Lynn was found in a field off Loring avenue after Christmas tree seekers discovered her in freezing conditions. She died at Salem Hospital from exposure with laudanum in her pocket. Johnson had been missing since Tuesday and was said to be slightly demented.
Governor Crane has sent his decision to Washington regarding President Roosevelt's offer of the treasury portfolio. George H. Brewer carries the letter and will reach the capital tomorrow. Public word on his choice is not available, though Dalton’s circle believes he will decline.
Lieutenant Governor John S. Bates, just back from Andersonville and shaken by a rear end collision of his train, returned home and told a Post reporter he knew nothing of any Cabinet offer to Governor Crane beyond what he had read in the papers. He said he would not comment further.
A prominent state official told the Post he does not expect Lieutenant Governor Bates to change titles this year. The governor has kept his plans private about the President's offer to be Secretary of the Treasury but is believed to continue as Governor to fulfill elected duties and respond to the President with thanks and regrets.
Washington December 22 Officials report Secretary Long has not resigned though he intends to retire soon. A telegram to the Sunday Post says no truth in rumors of resignation. Roosevelt’s cabinet offer to Governor Crane suggests Long will leave the cabinet, though Crane may not accept and Long may return to law practice in Massachusetts.
Washington December 22 The capital watches the Schley Sampson dispute as Schley Dewey and Miles form a strong trio against the administration. Rumors say Schley backers will seek Congress review while Miles may resist Secretary Root. Dewey’s praise of Schley could reappear in stronger terms. The contest seems ripe for a historic clash with broad partisans on both sides.
Detroit reports General R. A. Alger former Secretary of War underwent an operation for gall stones. At 7 p m the bulletin cited normal temperature and pulse with slight nausea after anesthesia. Doctors said the gall bladder was opened and drained due to infection from stones with no immediate danger and fair chances of recovery.
Bangor Maine endures anchor ice clogging the river since Saturday night, forcing a water plant shutdown and reducing supply to about two thirds of normal. Firefighting could be hampered and no ice harvest expected this winter unless river clears.
George H. Briggs, jailed in Newport awaiting Jan. 14 murder trial in Langdon, tried to kill himself by hanging using a towel loop. Sheriff Gunison reports the inmate complained of cold and sought access to a heated corridor before the incident.
Two Seyberth and Bonnell brothers aged 13 and 15 report they were attacked by a highwayman while returning from cutting Christmas trees. The man strapped them, gagged them, robbed them, and locked them in an abandoned summer house before setting it on fire. the boys escaped as the building burned to ashes.
Edward OConnor 40 residing at 68 Plymouth Cam-Respos collapsed during services at the Church of the Advent on Brimmer Street. He struck his head on a pew causing a severe scalp wound and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.
A young woman, claimed as the wife of financier Wakefield, arrives at his South Framingham home amid questions of her identity and social rank. Wakefield, in jail in East Cambridge, faces larceny charges as police note his letters to his wife and a loyal English valet behind the scenes.
The Martha Bradley from Bay of Islands arrives leaking at Louisburg bound for Gloucester. Niagara also from Gloucester reaches Louisburg with foregaff broken and foresail torn. Carrie W. Robson, carrying 900 barrels of herring, went ashore at Petrie’s Ledges but was hauled off by the tug Douglas H. Thomas and towed to North Sydney.
