General Greene approves Captain McCullagh plan to build a police force of a thousand men modeled on New York City. Clubs and revolvers ordered from New York as selection begins from 1800 applicants. Colonel Moulton and Captain McCullagh oversee picking. a detective bureau will be a feature. stations have been in captains homes with records as private property.
Fire at Fort Adams Newport Rhode Island destroyed stables and spread to a nearby gun shed containing powder. Private Sullivan died in the explosion and several soldiers were seriously or fatally burned. two bodies unidentified. An official inquiry will follow.
