Jernegan Pays Peace Offering to Sea Water Gold Directors

A committee member reports Rev. P. F. Jernegan formerly of Middletown now in Brussels has sent $75,000 in cash to the Electrolytic Marine Salts Company directors as a peace offering before returning to the United States with his family. Jernegan converted all stock and securities to cash prior to leaving.

Shafter Advocates U.S. Rule in Cuba After War

Savannah dispatch reports General Shafter declining self-government for Cubans. He argued the United States will retain control of Cuba for some time, governing by military force, and noted broad sympathy for keeping Cuba under American oversight. He spoke informally at a gathering with Postmaster General Smith and local reporters.

Rescue at sea saves Deer Hill crew after six day gale

The British steamer Pawnee towed the schooner Deer Hill toward Bermuda after a six day gale wrecked her with a broken rudder. Ten people including Captain C W Burns and Louisa Burns were rescued on December 12 as the Deer Hill, built at Moss Glen New Brunswick in 1891, 341 tons, finally abandoned in latitude 25.42 and longitude 52.49 W.

Cincinnati Strikes Rock While Leaving Santiago Port
