Port au Prince Dec 20. There is no ground to the rumor that President Heureaux of the Dominican Republic has been assassinated. General Heureaux arrived this morning at Jacmel about thirty miles southwest of Port au Prince and is in excellent health.
The jury in the William S. Jewett embezzlement case at the United States Circuit Court before Judge Brown retired at 4 50 p m without a verdict after midnight. Jewett, of Lawrence, is accused of embezzling 25000 as agent for Lake National Bank of Wolfboro New Hampshire.
At the Merchants Club dinner in Boston, Col. Clark Col. Logan and Col. Pfaff discussed the Cuban campaign. They cited shortages of rifles, medical supplies, and transport, noting command failures and the need for better regimental hospitals and artillery support.
Boston faces a surge of professional pickpockets on subway platforms especially Park Street and Scollay Square as shoppers flood the transit hubs. Women are the primary victims with losses estimated between $1000 and $1200 in the past week. Police arrest suspects Julien rank Edward Epstein English George Hall and others as investigators review records and photographs for the rogues gallery.

Fred Robinson and John Foley held on breaking and entering in twelve hundred dollars each.
In New York rumors link Rev John Watson known as Ian Maclaren to Plymouth Church as a potential new pastor after Dr Lyman Abbott. Prominent members and General Horatio King express interest but caution over timing and undecided committee deliberations following Maclaren’s December 1896 lecture tour.

B D O Connell of Lowell an inmate at the House of Correction has petitioned the United States District Court for a writ of habeas corpus alleging unlawful detention. He was sentenced to one year and a $500 fine for bribery of a city official. He served a year and cannot pay the fine and argues bankruptcy discharge shields him from further imprisonment.
Samuel Gompers is re elected president of the American Federation of Labor at the close of its eighteenth annual convention in Kansas City. Detroit is chosen as the next meeting site. The ticket includes P P McGuire James Duncan James O Connell John Mitchell Max Morris and Thomas J Kidd with Henry Lloyd of Massachusetts opposing the vote.
Senator Butler of North Carolina proposes an amendment to the pension bill that would extend existing laws to all invalid soldiers widows minors dependents army nurses and other pensioners regardless of whether they served Federal or Confederate forces. The measure allows Confederate veterans to claim only from the bill’s passage forward while existing laws remain in effect for other groups.

The court of inquiry at Fort Adams began after last night's blast killed four artillerymen. A stash of powder in the stables is under scrutiny for its role in the disaster. Newport firefighters found a shrapnel case as they fought the flames. Privates W. F. Butler and Frederick W. Kull were identified. a second body remained unidentified and wounded soldiers at the post hospital were reported to be improving.
Farnum of Nashua sues L A Worthen a Tilton fireman for 10000 claiming acid sprayed from an extinguisher during a December 17 fire at Lord Bros store in Tilton left him blind and others burned Attachments placed on Worthen's Tilton property.
Captain John McInnis of Rockland, Maine, was swindled for 125 by two strangers who befriended him at the Bangor Steamship Company wharf. One man posed as a fellow Rockland resident and the other pressed for payment, receiving a $125 loan secured by a check drawn on the Market Fulton National Bank of New York. The “creditor” vanished, and McInnis later learned the check was fake, a gold brick.
The annual Society of Colonial Wars in Massachusetts dinner occurs this evening at the Hotel Brunswick with extensive preparations and a large turnout expected. Speakers include Governor Walcott and Frederic J. De Peyster of New York.
